Dedicated to my dad Jack, an alcoholic,

who taught me compassion for others

    who find no help –

even when they look for it in the traditional places.

    Foreword

Alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness, Alzheimer’s, and other illnesses are caused from the individual’s unintentional neglect and/or ignorance of the spirit nature of the Self. Millions of people worldwide have these problems, and many succumb to them.

People may be helped, or subdued, by medicine to some degree, if the individual is willing to take prescription drugs every day for the rest of his life, but statistics prove that medical help is not the answer to healing dysfunction. Even so, our customs change slowly, and thousands suffer and die while we wait for a different approach to healing.

Professionals who offer help need to understand the spiritual problem that is causing the dysfunction. Sick people must be trained to think differently about themselves before they can recover. When the individual is trained to change from within by improving his love/hate relationship with himself, real healing becomes possible. Recovery happens only if the individual is willing to work on changing and improving his or her attitudes and negative opinions about the Self, (the I AM part of you). If these individuals already had knowledge of how to care for the Self successfully, they would not be sick. Through spiritual training, self-correction, and change from within, they can heal.

We can recover from dysfunctional problems by learning how we operate as thinking Spirit
