Old Country Wellness and Happiness Guide

About this ebook
The author generously shares about her life and struggles and how she came to not only survive them, but also how to work steadily towards a life of health, joy and gratitude. It is hard to describe this work because it covers so much ground. Is this the guidance of a loving and nurturing friend or life-coach, a healthy and dietary guide, a guide to better emotional health, a self-help book, or the work of a spiritual guide? Happily, it seems to be kind of a combination of all of these. There are no quick fixes here. However, the material is written in a way to personalize your health improvements by setting goals, with flexibility, but with an urging to be persistent and find creative ways to integrate these healthy habits into the reader’s life."

I dedicate this book, and I would like to express my deepest gratitude, to my wonderful parents: my mother Eugenia and my late father Alexei, who truly represent the embodiment of the most dedicated and loving parents; my beautiful, smart and talented sister, Violeta; my awesome and witty niece, Vladi; the ever-inventing himself, Alex, without whom this book would not have existed; all my amazing and loving aunts, uncles and cousins that influenced my upbringing; all my friends, especially my friend and editor, Jen, who believed in this book more than I did and who gently pushed and inspired me to move forward; my talented editor, Rachael, who perfected my manuscript; my accountability partner, Lauren, who kept me on track and provided insightful feedback along the way; my friend, Steven-John, for a very comprehensive and thoughtful Foreword
, and to Balboa Press for publishing it! My deepest gratitude to God, Fr. Steven, Fr. Costa, Fr. Paisios, Fr. Blasko, and all the teachers over the years that built the foundation for my spiritual growth.

Foreword

Licensed Psychologist

In the 1950s and 1960s, Western culture was exploding with all kinds of medical advances and modern cures, including psychological methods. These methods were put into popular print and spread rapidly to the main public. These new experts
seemed to offer scientific evidence that many of our assumptions about how we were living were wrong and needed correcting. This included parenting techniques that began to make even the most normal parent feel insecure or neurotic about how they were raising children. Counter to this movement, the late and great pediatrician and psychoanalyst, Donald Winnicott warned against these new-fangled methods and stressed that it was most important for mothers to trust their instincts when raising children. Abuse and parenting problems, according to Winnicott, resulted from being cut off from one’s natural connection with themselves. One might imagine that one would need to go to psychotherapy to be cured of all the scientific methods that infected the mind of an otherwise healthy parent!
While not a book about parenting, it is in the spirit of returning to one’s roots and traditions to cultivate healthy thoughts and habits, including diet, exercise, spiritual practice, along with other sound practices, that we graciously receive Tatiana Richards’ Old Country Wellness and Happiness Guide. By taking us through
