    The more I let go of the expectations of others, the better my life got.

    INTRODUCTION

    I spent most of my adult life trying to be better. I wanted to improve who I was and act better. I would be kinder, pick good partners, be more spiritual, and be happier according to what others said I needed to be. I figured I would know when I was better, because someone would tell me that I had changed for the better. Eventually, I realized that outside validation was not really helping me be happy on the inside. Nor did it help me achieve my desires. I still didn’t feel like I was good enough, or I had not gotten better enough. Finally, I started to look inside myself to find answers, to find myself, and to make permanent changes to reach my goals.

    I started to look at how my family, culture, gender, and relationships impacted what I thought, believed, felt, and how I acted. As I got older, I realized that some of the things those groups thought, believed, and felt did not match the true me. I also
