Dedication
This is for all those
who by one person
has been loved completely,
then left…
And loved again
and left…
And loved still again,
and left.
To those of you who waited by the phone,
for a call that never came…
And those of you who were asked to promise your love forever
and were promised love forever
and a lifetime hand-in-hand…
And those promises were not kept,
except by you.
I want you to know,
it is okay to still leave the porch light on
and the key under the mat,
just in case…
This book is for all of you
who never learned the lesson
that people who promise not to leave
do leave…
Except for people
like you
and me.
The Heart Sounds
The heart sounds
come from those
that love found
in tandem with
the waves’ pound
and the seagulls
flying, and dipping, and diving
and playing ’round.
The Sad Heart Sounds
Heart sounds are not always happy.
They can be sad or
filled to the innermost depths of the heart
with long lingering, anguish.
Sad heart sounds come from
a person
walking the beach alone,
not certain where her heart sound
will finally find its home.
The waves then beat out a lonely sound,
all day and all night long.
The seagulls fly far from the lonely ones…
They prefer not to fly in a lonely man’s shadow
that blocks the sun.
And as the waves sing out their call,
people make the loneliest
heart sounds of all.
They cry for love gone wrong,
and over that last love song.
They cry for a lover’s death,
as their love draws his one last breath.
They cry for children lost,
and through their tears, they swear
they will find the child at any cost.
They cry for those who have left,
and though they waited,
never returned.
Then they cry for the lesson that will
never be learned.
They cry for a chance not taken,
or a love not awakened.
They cry for a moment forgotten,
and for a love not begotten.
They cry for promises broken,
and the words left unspoken.
They cry for told lies
and every sort of goodbye.
They will cry for their true love
not yet met,
or they will cry for their regrets.
And they will often cry the deepest
for a mistake
they never, no never
meant to make.
Definitions
A heart sound is
a living, breathing, feeling
of love.
The waves can make them,
as they pound onto the shore.
The seagulls can make them
because they are the ocean’s birds
and they fly and sound out.
Certainly people can and do
make heart sounds,
because they love
and they love so deeply.
Sun Mistress
I walk the beach,
the waves flow over my feet,
the seagulls fly and soar.
I wonder, do you love me anymore?
I am now the sun’s mistress-
he watched over me
as I walked the beach
all day long.
Waves, seagulls,
and searching for heart sounds…
At a point in time,
for a few years and more,
you watched me carefully,
sometimes holding me close,
just to be certain that
no one else could have me,
but you,
so I would be no one else’s mistress,
even the sun’s,
and so no one could sing heart sounds
to me,
but you.
Spoken Words
One night when we were together,
I wiped a tear from your eye,
as you were lying in my lap.
Your mouth spoke words,
never spoken to me before,
"In the candlelight, you are very beautiful,
you look like an angel."
These were your heart sounds.
Enough for Everyone and More
Remember the times we were there?
The heart sounds were pounding,
rhythmically with the waves.
The waves contain the heart sounds,
even if you don’t want them to do so.
The waves never forget the curve of a body,
the length of a leg,
or bodies connecting.
The white seagulls play
and dig for dinner, both at once.
The gulls hold the heart sounds.
They don’t forget the sunbather,
who throws them food,
nor the bodies holding hands,
running into the waves,
passing them by.
As the gulls watch,
they take flight above the heads
of these bodies.
The ocean waves remember the bodies,
they cool them and make promises to
the bodies from the beach,
heart sound promises of a
comfortable day ahead.
You can find heart sounds everywhere…
in the waves,
through the gulls,
in the sand or in the wind.
You can find them in one another,
But go to the beach
and there
heart sounds
will be overflowing,
enough for everyone and
more.
1.jpgSaints and Sinners
The ocean will solve your crimes,
absolve you sins,
with God’s help.
The ocean rings out
its heart sounds
and you can believe again.
Everything is real and true again.
Every saint has a past,
believe it or not.
We were not made so perfectly that
anyone of us
would be without some sin.
Sit on the sand,
and let God help.
Every sinner has a future,
let the ocean help you.
Saints and sinners,
should all be swimmers.
We are all a little bit
