    Have you noticed that there are dozens of books on weight loss and yet most folks do not lose weight? So why do people buy these books when they usually do not help for the long run? We believe there is an urgent need for a book that covers most of the polemics thrown at you about how pounds are lost and gained and how to fix it. When you went to school, you learned basic principles so you could see and understand the bigger picture. Our extensive clinical experience taught us that people were confused and desperate for understandable information to guide them through this chaotic environment.

    After ten years of bringing our complementary expertise to bear on weight management and health issues for women, we felt the need to reach a larger audience, to help them sift through the mound of information available on weight control. Within this information glut, there are recurrent themes to abstract and discomforting human behavioral problems that need fixing. This book highlights these issues and directs the reader to a solution. There is not one solution because the pathways to obesity are highly individualistic, but there is hope for the motivated.

    If you are looking for a magical new diet, you will not find it in this book. However, if you are looking for a scientifically documented eating and living style, you will find it. It is a long-term solution to weight management. It means adopting a lifestyle of better eating, better behavior, appropriate response to stress, and usage of nutritional helpers.

We the authors are not obese. The inner self says that our bodies need constant attention to avoid the dangers of environment, aging and disease. From the beginning of school and before, your parents and teachers taught you about hygiene. Our minds absorb events that were welcome, forced, accepted and ubiquitous. These events may interfere with the needs of the outer self.

    The outer self is how you relate to others. Most of you are deeply concerned about your appearance. At least half of you feel deeply enough to avoid obesity. Respect for one’s body should be the first commandment of health. What about those who seem to be losing the mandate? How can you help them regain a better footing? Many want it but years of traveling on the wrong path are hard to reverse.

    The right path is a revised inner self and a smarter navigation. These are the foci of this book

    No surprises—only you. Not your doctor, health care provider, schools or even your parents. Doctors and nurses cannot be relied upon unless they have a designated weight program or have a close relationship with a referral center or program. Our current medical system is a triage after a quick screening to rule out serious illness, such as sending you to a lab or imaging center. Your parents may or may not be useful. As matter of fact in preventing obesity, they have not done a good job. Your schools have also fallen prey to pleasing you about eating rather than educating you.     , but has not come up with a dynamic salesperson as Dr. Koop was in convincing us about the dangers of smoking. Since eating is both social and a pleasurable reward, it effects and influences our emotions, and that is part of the problem.

    The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In other words, it is up to you. You should care for your bodies the way we care for your automobiles. The analogy does not hold very well because we get only one body. By respecting your body, you liberate the mind and expand your social well-being.

    The United States Department of Health and Human Services emphasized the essentials of health by a proclamation called Healthy People 2010. It lists ten leading health indicators: physical activity, overweight and obesity, tobacco use, substance abuse, mental health, injury and violence, environmental quality, immunization, responsible sexual behavior, and access to health care.
