    Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I would like to thank my wife, Svetlana, for all her support throughout all these years. I was obsessed with finding the solution to sustainable weight loss. Most of the days during the week, I did not get home as early as I wanted, and I had to work many weekends too, so most of the responsibilities of running the household fell on her. She is an incredible woman because besides being mainly responsible for most of the house stuff, she managed to be one of the top real estate agents in Connecticut. I am a fortunate guy to be married to her.

There are many people, who through their books, lectures, and other writings, helped me figure out how sustainable and healthy weight loss can be achieved, and I am very grateful to them. However, there are a handful whose books and lectures made the most significant difference in my life and also in finding the solution to sustainable weight loss.

One of the people I want to thank is Tony Robbins. Although I have never met him, his books and programs helped me stay motivated through all the ups and downs of finding the solution I was seeking. Also, his books and programs helped me to better understand human psychology and also helped me to understand myself and the people I am trying to help in order to change their habitual behaviors.

Another person I would like to thank is Bruce Lipton. His books made a huge difference in my life and also helped find what I was looking for. His book Biology of Belief provided a crucial piece of the puzzle I needed to complete my solution to lasting weight loss.

I am also very grateful to Dr. Robert Maurer.  His program, One Small Step Can Change Your Life, introduced me to the Kaizen philosophy, which was the last piece of information I needed to solve the weight problem.  For me, the Kaizen way is by far the best way to apply change into your life, if you want that change to last.

I would also like to thank Wim Hof. His book, The Way of The Iceman, helped me better understand how much control we have over our body, and although I was pretty healthy already, his techniques helped me get in even better shape.

Marion Nestle is another person I would like to thank. Her books confirmed that I was on the right track in finding the solution to sustainable weight loss, which was a big motivation to keep going.

Dr. Joe Dispenza’s books and lectures helped to open my mind and helped me to understand better how the law of attraction works, which was a big help in finding the solution.

I am sure I have missed a few people whose writings played a part in finding the solution, and I apologize in advance for forgetting to mention them, but I am grateful to all of them.

A special thanks to my mother, Iris Mastrogianni, she was one of the few people who supported my decision to quit my cooking career and get into the fitness field. I would also like to thank the rest of my family, the Rountos and Beretis, because, without their support, my training business might not even exist.

Most importantly, I am grateful to you for buying this book and putting your trust in my system.

    Introduction

Have you ever wondered why, in spite of all the diet plans, weight loss books and fitness professionals, the obesity rate continues to increase?

The answer is simple. The process of achieving sustainable weight loss is different than the process of merely losing weight.

Unfortunately, the way most weight loss and diet programs approach losing weight is not sustainable which is why 95% of dieters end up failing repeatedly.

In fact, achieving and maintaining a lean and healthy body is easier than you ever dreamed possible. I’ve spent my life learning the right ways to lose weight, keep it off and improve your health in the process. After 27 years of research I’m ready to share my secrets of sustained weight loss.

How did I come up with a sustainable solution for losing weight and improving your health, when so many others have failed?

You see, most fitness professionals today get their education on fitness, health, and nutrition from a college, university, and professional certification courses. There’s nothing wrong with formal education, but the problem with too much prescribed education is that it can limit your ability to think with an open mind and outside the box. Plus, if what you were taught was not 100% accurate or up to date, you will have a tough time discovering a solution that works. The fact is, there is still inaccurate information taught in colleges today about proper nutrition and weight loss, which I will explain later in this book.

Unlike most fitness professionals who just studied health and fitness, I didn't only research health and weight loss; I lived it firsthand. I was raised on a Greek island, where I was immersed in a very healthy culture. When I lived there thin was the norm; people in their 90s lived productive lives free from most of the diseases that older adults suffer and die from in the western world today. When I lived in Greece, I thought cancer was a rare disease, and diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's seemed nonexistent.

My upbringing caused me to question many of the things I learned in school about proper nutrition and health because they contradicted how I lived and ate in Greece, this kept my mind open to other possibilities. What I realized is just because something is taught in a University or a college, or because the person who said it has a Ph.D., does not mean it's right.  We need to question everything we learn, and we need to make sure what we learn is logical.

The question that drove me was how people living in healthy regions around the world, including my hometown in Greece, can maintain their weight and good health effortlessly while people in America have such a hard time keeping the weight off after they lose it?  Answering that question was the key which led me to the sustainable weight loss solution detailed throughout my book.

Fat No More is not just theories or impractical instructions like counting calories and measuring your food. What you will find is practical and proven advice on how to develop Simple Healthy Habits, which all healthy regions have in common. My clients at Live Your Way Thin have been able to follow the same advice and have seen amazing results and more importantly, sustainable effects.

The fact is, only through permanent changes in your daily habitual behaviors can you achieve and maintain healthy weight loss. With this book, you will not just learn the 7 essential healthy behaviors that will have the most significant impact on your weight and health, but you will also discover how to make all 7 behaviors a routine and part of your life, so when you lose the weight, you will keep it off for life!

I love what I do for a living. I genuinely feel this is my calling in life, to help people lose weight in a way that enables them to keep it off, without having to sacrifice all their free time working out, counting calories and points, and giving up their favorite foods.

Life is about having a life worth living, not dieting or exercising. Many fitness professionals have forgotten that, or because they love exercising and don't mind continually watching their diet, they assume that once people discover the benefits of exercising and dieting, they will joyfully make their lives all about fitness. They are wrong. Most people don't want to spend their free time exercising or planning their diet, including me. I don't live to exercise to exhaustion and to watch my diet to the point of constant restrictions. Yes, I do want to take care of my health, but that is so I can enjoy life.

Up until now, people only had two choices, either be unhealthy and enjoy life or be healthy and live a less gratifying life. Neither of these two choices are good.

Fat No More gives you a third choice, where you can have the lean and healthy body you want and still enjoy your life, including all your favorite foods.

    Chapter 1:

    How We Got Fat

Section 1: Your Body Is Meant To Be Lean & Healthy

The human body is designed by nature to be lean and healthy. No one is meant to be fat and unhealthy by nature. It is an incredible machine that can self-heal; it can adapt to many extreme environments and withstand unbelievable amounts of abuse.

The body’s immune system can build antibodies to fight viruses and bacteria. It can grow more muscle if it needs to get stronger. It can increase the lung capacity if it needs to be able to run longer or stay underwater longer. Let me give you one example of how well the body can adapt to extreme conditions.

An average person can hold their breath for 45 seconds to 1 minute. In Japan, before the invention of scuba diving, there were pearl divers called Ama. Ama were exclusively women who could hold their breath between 4 to 6 minutes. Keep in mind, they were actively working underwater and harvesting pearl oysters, making it even harder to hold their breath for that long. According to Guinness Book of World Records, one man held his breath for 22 minutes free diving.

The body can adapt to a cold environment, and it can adjust to a hot environment. It can also adapt to high altitudes where there isn’t as much oxygen. Wim Hof has demonstrated the ability of the body to adjust to many extreme environments, given the proper training.

Wim Hof was able to stay submerged in ice from the neck down for 1 hour and 53 minutes without his core body temperature changing. An average person would have been dead in minutes. He climbed Mount Everest in his shorts without getting altitude sickness. He completed a marathon in the Namib Desert without drinking any water. He completed another marathon above the polar circle in Finland dressed only in shorts. The temperature was as low as -20 degrees. Wim Hof has demonstrated how incredible is the human body.

If our body is such a great machine and can adapt to almost anything, how come most people are so fat, and we are such a sick and overmedicated society? That is the question, I will be answering in the next section.

Section 2: Why Our Body Is No Longer Lean & Healthy

In the previous section, I talked about how the human body is supposed to be lean and healthy and adapts to its environment. In this section, I will discuss why our body is no longer lean and healthy and how it seems to have lost the ability to adapt to the environment.

Currently, around 75% of Americans are overweight, about 36% are obese, and according to a Mayo Clinic study, close to 70% of Americans are on at least one prescription drug or more. Something is not working the way it’s supposed to.

There are a few reasons why our body is no longer lean and healthy. One of the main reasons is too much comfort. Let me tell you a story about fish that will help you better understand what is happening to our bodies. As you might know, the deeper you go in the ocean, the higher the pressure. At 10,000 feet, the pressure is around 300 times the pressure on the surface, and yet there are fish that live that deep and thrive.

They can do that because their body has adapted to that kind of pressure. Now, if you take those fish and bring them closer to the surface where you don't have as much pressure, they might be able to survive for a little while, but sooner or later they will die. Why? Isn't it more comfortable not having all that constant pressure exerted on your body?

The reason they die is that their body has adapted to very high pressures, and when the pressure is no longer there, they can't survive.

Humans have been on the earth for around 6 million years. All these years, the body adapted to a much harsher environment than the human body has to deal with today.

If you think about it, it’s only the past 100 years or so, that humans are living more comfortably than the body did 1,000 years ago. In the past 50 years, we have gotten even more cozy.

Think about it, most people living in the western world, do not experience being hot or being cold for prolonged periods. For example, the only time most people feel cold is when they walk from their heated house to their heated car.

Did you know experiencing cold and letting your body try to warm up, or the reverse, feeling hot and allowing your body to cool itself down, is great for your health?

For example, regular exposure to cold aids burning fat, strengthens the nervous system, regulates blood sugar levels, combats oxidative stress, strengthens the immune system. Wim Hof has proven the positive effects of regular exposure to cold has on the immune system. Wim has not gotten sick for over 20 years.

Did you know that exposure to heat also has benefits to your brain and helps the body with detoxification, which is excellent for overall health?

In the past, people would get all these benefits naturally by simply getting exposed to the environment. It is a uncomfortable being cold or hot, but that is why people found ways to eliminate that discomfort not realizing how crucial it was to our health.
