    A Shot in the Dark

    ELLA

These people were nuts. One minute they were shooting bullets over Ella, Shay, and Lin’s heads, the next they were leading them into the woods, so they could squeeze out information regarding Base Camp A. Honestly, they terrified Ella. They were unpredictable. Wild, even. Which meant they could say or do anything and not suffer any consequences. They wanted one thing and one thing only: the supplies and provisions located inside base camp.

Ella began to see right through Lin’s proposal. He’d made a smart move, playing the I-can-get-you-in card. Luckily, these idiots hadn’t figured out what he was up to just yet. But that, of course, didn’t mean they’d never figure out his plan.

Even she wasn’t sure of Lin’s arrangement.

But if she had to guess, she’d bet he was biding time. For what, she didn’t know. Maybe it was all about keeping their trio alive. Maybe it was about letting the resistance deal with these morons once they were inside the camp’s walls. Whatever Lin had planned, Ella trusted his decision; he certainly wasn’t unintelligent by any means.

She might not understand Lin’s idea, but she could play along. The question was: had Shay caught on, or was she confused? Ella hoped she’d take the path of least resistance. Any opposition on their part could spell disaster, since they were dealing with a bunch of loose canons.

You’re not going to touch us, Shay stated.

    She hadn’t caught on.

    Oh, great. Here we go.

For a brief moment, Ella and Lin shared an oh-shit gaze. Ella feared what these crazies would do to Shay, and to her and Lin. Obviously, Shay hadn’t thought about what would happen if she opened her mouth.

But Ella had the feeling they were all about to find out.

What the fuck did you just say to me? the man who’d been doing most of the talking asked.

    Shit, shit, shit.

They were as good as dead.

What have you done, Shay? Ella wanted to shout.

She didn’t feel like dying today, and she didn’t come all this way just to have her still-warm corpse fed to a bunch of hungry zoms.

Don’t pay any attention to her, Ella said, unsure of where she was taking this conversation. She smarts off to everyone, including us.

The main dude stared at Ella for a few seconds, then said, She better keep her fuckin’ mouth shut if she knows what’s good for her.

Shay opened her mouth to speak, but Lin covered it with his hand.

    Not another word, he hissed.

    Unflinching, Shay’s eyes
