    The End of the Beginning

    ELLA

Group two had been gradually trekking through the series of underground tunnels for at least thirty minutes. Ella wasn’t sure if they were close to the queen and her army, or not. She had hoped they’d get in and out quickly, with very few obstacles standing in their way. But so far, nothing had jumped out of the shadows and attacked them, which made her more uneasy than if they were fighting some Kyborgs.

Where the hell are they? she wondered.

The Naktirians led the group through the dark passageway, their built-in, chest-armor flashlights casting a bright glow on the walls surrounding them. Ella stared at the black sludge coating the interior of the cave’s tunnel system. Earlier, the Naktirians had established this dark ooze was toxic and acidic. One wrong move and a person accidentally bracing against the wall would lose a hand.

A cold, icy tendril snaked up Ella’s spine, base to the nape of her neck, and she shuddered at the thought of the damage the acidic slime would cause if someone forgot it was there in the heat of battle. She hoped and prayed nobody in their group, or the first group, would be subjected to that kind of torture.

What other cruel traps lay ahead?

Ella was glad she wasn’t at the front of the group; that job went to the Naktirians. If there were any traps, they would be the first to set them off. Unsure of whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, since the Naktirians were the ones with better weapons, flashlights, and technology, Ella shoved that negative thought to the back of her mind, then buried it. She shouldn’t be focusing on anything but the group’s mission right now.

Where are they? a guy to her right quietly asked. In the confined space of the cave, his voice echoed much louder than usual.

The Naktirians didn’t respond, at first, then one answered, I am not picking up a heat signal.

    So, they were hiding? Why?

A rumble spread through the cave, shaking the ground beneath Ella’s feet. Her first thought was an earthquake, but then she remembered that group one went in first, and they were tasked with the same mission: trap the queen by blowing up the main tunnel. Judging by the sound and reverberation, they did just that.

I hope they’re okay, said Lin.

He hadn’t left Ella’s side since they entered the cave, even though he was the one who held the grenades and had the job of ensuring the main tunnel collapsed, with the queen and her minions trapped inside. Ella hadn’t asked him, but she was pretty sure Lin never set off a grenade before.

Maybe the Kyborgs aren’t here because they’re too busy focusing their attention on the first group.

But if the first group had sealed off the Kyborgs, then the Kyborgs would be looking for another way out, and they’d head for the other exit. Straight towards Ella and the rest of her crew.

How many of them had been killed by the first group? How many were coming for them?

A wave of nausea expanded in Ella’s stomach. This wasn’t good, especially if there were a lot of them; the resistance and Naktirians came equipped, but they weren’t that equipped. Their resources were limited. Once the bullets ran out, the only weapons they had left were the Naktirians’ laser guns and the grenades Lin clutched in his each of his hands.

Lifting the black device he held, the Naktirian commander scanned the dark passageway in front of the group. He shook his head when the screen didn’t show what he was
