    ELLA

All Ella and the other survivors could do was wait for Cantrell to return with orders. After he and Xak’thul left the remaining resistance members in the woods, nobody had much to say. Ella couldn’t blame anyone; they’d been through so much, lost so many loved ones. The last battle left a gaping wound in their hearts, and it tested their resolve to overcome whatever obstacles stood in their way. She couldn’t speak for everyone, but, personally, she was so tired of fighting these foreign creatures. She wanted this war to be over, so everyone could return to some semblance of a normal life.

What does normal even mean anymore? she wondered.

There’d be nothing normal about returning to a more peaceful existence, not after the worldwide destruction and chaos that resulted in countless lives lost, destroyed homes, and graphic images she’d never be able to eradicate from her mind. Everyone on this planet would never forget this war; it disrupted the courses they were on, threw them off-track, derailing all of their previous goals and plans.

Now, they were just trying to survive. To live. And the only way they stood a chance at continuing to thrive on this planet was by destroying the Kyborgs’ queen. She was the end to this disaster, and that was the only remaining hope.

It’s also our last resort. If this doesn’t work, what else can we do to stop the Kyborgs?

Ella wasn’t sure what plan Xak’thul or Major Cantrell would think of next, but if the queen was hiding out nearby, they couldn’t sit here, waiting to be struck again. They had to act—fast. Hopefully, they’d consider a plan B, in case the first idea didn’t work.

Think they’ll find her? Ella asked, breaking the awkward silence surrounding the group.

Matt was the first to speak. I hope so.

Yeah, said Shay, if they can’t find her with alien technology, then they need to fix their shit.

A few of the survivors laughed, and Ella smiled. Grins weren’t something she was used to seeing, not lately at least. Not since there wasn’t much to smile about.

Her gaze wandered towards the trees all around them, giants standing tall and resolute in the face of destruction. She couldn’t see Major Cantrell or Xak’thul—the smoke was too thick—but that didn’t stop her from hoping they’d reappear at any second. Ella knew that once they returned, they’d have one of two possible answers: either they found the queen, or they didn’t.

She hoped it was the first.

If their response was the latter, Ella feared what the next step would be in this war. How could they even begin to locate the queen, if she wasn’t hiding underground? Had the Naktirians found her ship at the edge of the galaxy, or not? Because if she wasn’t on Earth,
