    ELLA

Breathing a sigh of relief, Ella’s arms squeezed Lin a little tighter. They wouldn’t have to worry about those backwoods outsiders coming after them again. It was bad enough the first time, but she wasn’t sure they’d survive a second round. Not after what they did to Shay, and not after they hunted her, Shay, and Lin like they were a pack of wild animals. She and her friends were people, fellow humans, for crying out loud. But those dumbasses didn’t care.

It’s over, Lin mumbled against Ella’s hair. They’re gone.

Ella’s body quivers had subsided to nothing more than occasional trembles. The nerve-fraying sensation that had leeched onto her, feeding on her strength, suddenly dissipated. She was liberated from the crazies. They all were.

But she and the others hadn’t been freed from their other attackers in this apocalypse. Once the Kyborgs and zombies had been wiped out, they’d have a reason to celebrate. Until then, she’d just mentally throw an end-of-the-world party. Or maybe it was a beginning-of-the-world party—at least it would be when the Kyborgs were defeated.

Releasing her hold on Lin’s waist, she peered up at him and said, We better go help. Her eyes drifted to the devastation all around her. "We have a lot of work to do."

Scorched wood, and something that reeked of hot electrical wires, mingled with the bitter, ashy scent of gunpowder and the sharp, coppery stench of blood. Ella’s stomach rolled a few times. This wasn’t how she wanted to remember base camp, not after all they’d been through in the last week, fighting to retake their planet from space invaders. She wanted to remember this place as the location where a small group of humans stood their ground, assaulted the Kyborgs alongside the Naktirians, and won.

But this? This wasn’t how she envisioned base camp when the fighting stopped.

Ella stepped away from Shay and Matt. They were in good hands, and the worst was
