    Knights of Labor - VCP

    Chapter 1

    Janelle Returns

It was over. The marriage ceremony had ended. Robert and Alexa Gibson had left and went on their honeymoon. The people invited to this small wedding had begun clearing out. The only people left were Janelle, Patrick, Corrine, and Jayden. They spent their time cleaning out the reception and wedding area. This took them a couple of hours, but they made sure they cleaned everything.

When all was finished, it was time for departures. Jayden was the first to leave. He looked at his phone and noticed an urgent message. He left without saying much.

Patrick and Corrine Fry took Janelle to Joseph’s river on the Virginia side, and they watched the sunset. From here, Janelle would embark on her journey across the nation. Janelle still had to keep her promise of strengthening the KOL in the cities sending distress calls. This was her official send-off from Patrick, an emotional time for her as well as them.

Corrine had tears falling rapidly from her face. She hugged Janelle and squeezed her tightly. She kissed Janelle on her left cheek and then rested her head on Janelle’s shoulder while telling her how much she loved her. Corrine looked away toward the metro DC area.

Fry remained silent for another couple of minutes, enjoying this time with both his wife and one of his good friends. He had many things he could say right now. He only chose two things. Don’t be a stranger, Janelle. You have a home here, and many friends got your back. I love you like the sister I never had. Fry balled up his fist. Saying that brought up a memory he tried suppressing for some time.

Janelle nodded. She didn’t respond. Instead, she let the silence do the talking. That was until her phone went off. This wasn’t a normal alarm. She watched the screen and then placed her phone down. She stood up. Now she had something very important she must say. I’m needed. She said her goodbyes and ran toward her bike. She didn’t look back.

    Four Years Later

North of New York’s Imperial City in the Westchester County, Janelle was on a boat heading toward the Palisades. She crossed over into New Jersey’s Empire City area. She wasn’t alone.

The Tailores fight has been an intense fight, Ms. Bellatoni, the Columbian vixen known as Christina Cortez said. Both sides have lost people. We’ve had some close friends in our camp pull the trigger on other allies. Some even came at my neck and tried it, but you know me. I’m one of the tougher cookies to crumble. They can try knocking me down, but I get up and do even better.

Janelle nodded. She wasn’t focusing on Christina. She focused on her favorite city in the world, Imperial City. From here, she could see all the skyscrapers in the borough of New Albany. She didn’t spend much time in the city, seeing that she just recently got back from her journey across the nation.

I know you’re upset, but you should know the deal. Tina Barry and her team have agreed on focusing the remainders in Los Aces. As you know, Paul was slain after going hard against one of their top leaders. It was a sad day when we got the word. He will be greatly missed.

Janelle finally said something. This is war. It’s bound to happen. The Tailores hate us for us constantly thwarting their schemes. The feeling is mutual.

Christina nodded, then continued. We have them running this time, and we’ll keep the pressure on them. Toni Morelli has a couple others cleaning up the scraps in Yahmira, Illinois. She contacted me, and she is confident that she will be back in New York within the week. The boat was moments from hitting the docks.

Janelle prepared herself for the departure. She stood up and stretched, ready for a fight. She turned toward Christina and stared, her eyes piercing Christina’s soul. I’m bummed out that our boss doesn’t want us focusing on Imperial City. The areas with the most Tailores volume are New York and Lancaster, Florida. We should be the front-runners there.

Stephanie and Roselyn Rodriguez are leading the Imperial City team as per his orders. Crystal and Alan are also there. Imperial City is taken care of. I know that’s home for us, but we mustn’t worry about it.

Where’s Paris? Which team is he leading? Janelle was amazed at how much changes were made since the last major battle.

Adam and his wife, Trish, are going after the big boys in Lancaster. Their team is in hot pursuit of Jayleen and Snake. They have it the hardest. The majority of the Tailores will be opposing them.

Janelle felt a bit offended, even though she was confident Paris wouldn’t need her help. There was only one concern. Who are we facing?

We have been given the task of taking down the dangerous dynamic duo. Carlos Banderas and Luke Anderson. They may not be the biggest threats from the Tailores camp, but we won’t take them lightly. They will fight, and they will not stop until we’re dead. We won’t make the same mistake as Paul and underestimate them. Christina stood up since it was time for the mission. It was said they retreated here, following Jayleen’s orders. If we can intercept them, they won’t know how to react.

What about Gloria? Has anybody found her yet?

There was a long pause. Christina didn’t have a definitive answer. She looked away, ashamed. She felt like she failed Janelle. I’m sorry, I didn’t get that information. She’s disappeared off the map. She could be anywhere.

Janelle sighed as she grabbed the third member of their small team. When she found him, she told him it was time. Raphael! We gave you your space! Your time has come.

Raphael was a clean-shaven Asian and white mix with wavy brown hair. He was handsome and goofy despite having a fit body. He heard Janelle call him and grew excited. He ran toward the ladies. It’s about time you called me. What took you so long! Damn, girl! He acted like he was serious, then he suddenly smiled and gave Janelle a hug. He held her tightly while looking at Christina. Don’t get jealous. Okay, boo-thang!

Christina was the light-skinned Colombian woman. She wore loads of makeup and was thick in the right places. She wore her signature purple and black colors in a dress that showed off her curves well. Her hair was brown and short, matching her brown eyes. She had an accent when she spoke. Thanks, but no thanks, papi!

Oou! She called me papi! Raphael threw his right hand out toward Christina, making a cat growl while letting go of Janelle. Meow! Isn’t my purr seductive like a cat?

Janelle shook her head and walked away from Raphael. I don’t know why I agreed on having you here with us. Of all the people I got stuck with, we have the goofiest bodybuilder on planet earth! Janelle slowly walked from the docks up toward the Palisade Parkway. On the side street was a car she could use. She hot-wired it. Okay! Get in the car and tell me where’s the first place we must investigate.

Before they moved anywhere, their boat exploded. They looked toward the boat and heard some gunshots. They looked at one another and then nodded. Janelle stepped from the car and joined them.

I guess you got your answer, sweet cheeks! Raphael pulled out his pistol, readying himself.

Don’t ever call me sweet cheeks in your life! Ever again! Janelle said calmly, then she led the trio. She ran back toward the boat and examined the area nearby. She didn’t see anybody around, but she knew trouble lurked nearby. You two, follow my lead. I’m only saying this once. Okay? As she said that, she heard a door slam on a yacht further down the docks. She kept staring at the yacht, and then she sprinted toward it.

Christina tried stopping Janelle, but Janelle overpowered her. She looked at Janelle, shocked. What do you think you’re doing? she furiously yelled. Don’t you know… Oh, fuck it! She rolled her eyes then followed Janelle.

Raphael stayed behind Christina, looking back and around. He thought he saw a shadowy figure hiding behind a nearby garbage can. He almost shot but stopped himself. You should know by now you can’t convince Janelle once her mind is made up. Just go with the flow, and hope we don’t get killed along the way.

Hmph! Christina then tossed her gun at Raphael, which he caught it. She then stopped chasing after Janelle, who was clearly a distance away from them. Her eagerness will be her downfall one day. I won’t be anywhere near her when that happens.

Raphael aggressively shook his head. Don’t put that negative energy out there! Come on, sweetie buns! You should know by now you can manifest your own problems speaking them into existence. We don’t need that bad energy surrounding us during our mission. Raphael heard some rattling behind him. He turned back around and pointed his gun.

That was a raccoon, Raphael! Don’t be so scared!

In the meantime, Janelle had finally reached the yacht. She looked back, wondering why she didn’t hear neither Christina nor Raphael. She watched as they walked slowly behind her, and it pissed her off. She placed her hands on her hips. Come on! Hurry up! She yelled out loud enough for them to hear her. If I don’t make my move, I will lose that motherfucker who tried me! She ran toward the door despite the constant yelling from Christina. When she opened the door, she noticed Raphael jetted toward her.

Wait for Christina! Raphael stood on the side and signaled for her.

Janelle looked petrified, moments from putting the hands on Raphael. She stopped herself, however. She’d save that energy for later. She moved back and waited. As you insist, gentleman.

    I’ve finally convinced you? That’s a first.

Don’t get used to it. Next time, I’ll kick your head from your shoulders and watch it roll. Got me, buddy? When Christina reached the duo, Janelle said something to her as well. And you. She pointed. This ain’t no time for a leisure stroll around the area. Did you not see the bullets come our—"

Christina stopped Janelle right there. Listen here! You won’t talk to me like a child. I’m here aiding you. I won’t stand here and watch you rush to your death. You don’t know what could be waiting for you in there.

Whatever’s down there is more scared of me than I am of them. I kill with my bare hands. You know it and you’ve seen it.

Raphael had enough of their argument. Stop right there! The both of you! I’m not having two angry beautiful women yelling while I’m around. We got this door open, and we’re all here. We make our move right now! Raphael was the one who went through the door first.

Janelle squinted but followed. Christina followed last, with her fists balled up. She then closed the door, and the room got dark. All of a sudden, the lights turned on, and the trio looked surprised.

    Which way do we go?

Janelle examined the mailroom, noticing three doors. She picked the one by the bags of mail on the right. She opened it and held it for them. The hallways in the next area were colored yellow and black. The hallway was also slimmer than the previous. Janelle had her team walk in single file and moving cautiously. I’m not liking the vibes I’m getting. We move extra careful around here.

As you insist, Captain Charisma, Christina responded, examining each abandoned intersection she walked past.

While they continued walking down the hallway, there was a mysterious person running across the intersection. He did it twice, going back and forth. On the third time, he stopped in the center and watched the trio as they reached the end of the hallway. The trio noticed the locked door and a staircase. They took the only way, the staircase, after unsuccessfully opening the door. After reaching the bottom floor, they slowed down significantly.

Should we continue? Christina asked, looking like she was giggling. There’s no way he’s still here. Maybe we should burn the yacht down. What do you think? Christina already noticed Raphael disagreeing with her method. She didn’t care. Your opinion doesn’t matter. Janelle. You tell us.

Janelle opened the door while looking back at Christina. Upon opening the door, she saw the lower sequence room. Janelle didn’t like how this looked, simply because there were four doors at the end of each corner. Otherwise, the room was pretty much empty. This place is quiet. Too quiet for comfort. Be prepared for a fight, I guarantee it. She walked toward the center first.

Raphael followed next, promising he’d protect Janelle no matter who or what tries fighting. He also felt the vibe. Don’t worry, Janelle! You have two reliable friends covering your back. Don’t be scared.

First, Janelle responded while examining the weird white substance lying on the ground. You called yourself my friend. Don’t play yourself, Raphael. We’re cool, but not that cool. Janelle played with the white substance until she found what appeared to be a scooper. Second, I think we may have stumbled on to something major.

While Janelle focused on the substance, Christina examined the entire sequence area surrounding them. She noticed the blood on the walls and severed body pieces on the floor. She felt her heart turn. This place is giving me the creeps. Does anybody else have chills running down their spines? Do tell me now!

Before anybody else could respond, there was sudden cluttering coming from the walls. It started low, and now it grew louder. The cluttering surrounded them behind each door on the corner. There were also repeated screams.

What the hell? Raphael exclaimed, pointing his gun toward the top left corner door. I usually don’t mind high-pitched screams and screeches when singing, but this isn’t music to my ears! It sounds so painful and excruciating.

Janelle responded to that quickly. Whatever I’ve gotten us involved with, I’ll get us out of it. Janelle prepared herself as she heard engines revving coming from the bottom right corner door. She focused her attention there. And it sounds like it won’t be a simple fight either. I hope you guys been keeping up with your training. You may need it. Janelle focused on Raphael in particular.

Hey! Don’t be looking at me! Raphael exclaimed, feeling offended. He turned bright red while staring back at Janelle.

Suddenly, all the noise came from the bottom corner of the room. There was now a loud banging noise. The door sprouted open. All attention went toward that door as five men came running in the room. These five men held chain saws and screamed at the top of their lungs.

Christina angrily rebuked Janelle, now realizing they fell into an obvious trap. They got us good, Janelle! They wanted us to come here, knowing we couldn’t resist an explosion.

This didn’t bother Janelle, however. She shrugged and responded, It just means more people for me to kill.

The first fight began as Janelle and Raphael fought these five enemies. They got close with their chain saws and swung, but missed Raphael. Two almost caught Janelle, but she slid to the left. She jumped over another attempt. Raphael was given enough time, and he shot those enemies until they died. With those two dead, Janelle focused on the other two who almost caught Raphael from behind.

There was one remaining chain saw attacker running around, chasing Christina. He almost caught her in the back, but she ran by the coke pile and jumped over it. The chain saw attacker, however, walked through it and slipped right into Christina’s hands. Christina pulled her knife and stabbed him until he couldn’t move anymore. The threat was over, at least for now.

You see, Janelle confidently yelled, balling up her fists. We have the advantage here! Never give up hope!

As she yelled that, the bottom right door opened. Chain swingers came from this side. The chains weren’t instant kills like chain saws, but had a further reach. As they swung their metal chains, they knocked Raphael’s gun from his left hand and caught him twice on his side, knocking him down. Christina also had a challenge going against them while watching for their swings. Their attacks also brought her to her knees.

This leaves Janelle as the only KOL still standing. You won’t take me down as easy as them. Janelle dodged a chain swing aimed for her neck. Then she grabbed the chain and yanked it along with the Tailores member. She shot and killed him while he was still falling. The second death came when she used the same technique. This time, she yanked him until he was directly in front of her. She stabbed him six times, and then she wrapped the chain around him and her knives. He fell down like a mummy.

The third attacker swung three times before Janelle attacked. She yanked him close, wrapped his chain around his neck, and snapped it. The fourth one she yanked toward her and threw five strong jabs and a kick that left him semiconscious. She placed a grenade in his pocket. After wrapping the chain completely around him, she pushed him out of the chain. The grenade went off simultaneously, and he exploded. The last one holding a chain was an easy target. She took a knife, tossed it, and kicked it in his neck. After he died, Janelle was the one standing tall.

Who else wants the smoke? she yelled, feeling extra confident. She turned toward her fallen friends and helped them back to their feet. And this is why I told both of you to keep up with your training. You could’ve dealt with them as easily as I have.

There wasn’t a time for celebration. A third set of five members entered the room, this time from the top left corner. These men held small machine guns and fired at the trio. Despite having the advantage with those guns, this fight was the easiest for the trio. Before they knew it, they stood tall again.

The trio waited for the last door on the upper right corner. If the pattern continued, this would be the next door which opened. It happened just like they predicted. That door opened, and Tailores members wielding knives came running at them. They tossed knives from a distance and dodged all gunfire that came their way, making them trickier foes to fight compared to the other sets. But once Janelle figured out their pattern, she broke through their defenses easily and took them down.

When the fifth knife bearer died, Raphael praised Janelle. He had never seen a woman fight as efficiently as Janelle, and it always excited him. Janelle! You are one of a kind! I don’t know what motivated you, but all women need this type of motivation. He pointed to Christina. Hell, even she needs motivation like you.

Hey! Christina got offended, and she flexed on Raphael. I may not be as well trained as our leader, but don’t think I’m a pushover. After all, I won’t need her caliber of skills to whoop your ass around! Remember that!

Now things got even crazier. All four doors burst open simultaneously with people running at them from each direction. Some had chain saws, others wielding metal chains, guns, and knives. The doors kept opening randomly, and the room filled with people quickly.

Raphael backed up to the only pole in the room, shooting whatever he could while dodging knives and bullets. He couldn’t stay in one spot for too long. I guess now’s the big challenge. We either keep shooting or die. The choice is yours. Raphael saw Christina was cornered by two Tailores, and he shot, saving Christina’s life. Boo-yah! Scarface doesn’t have shit on me! Say hello to my little friend!

This fight was the wildest of the four fights, with the doors swinging open repeatedly. Janelle was overwhelmed, but she loved the challenge. Soon she saw thirty-two men circling the room and twenty-four on the ground dead.

Die! one of the thirty-two yelled.

Janelle shook her head. The only ones dying are the ones who tried trapping us! Feel the wrath of Janelle! She exclaimed while doing repeated flips and dodging attacks from knives, bullets, and metal chains. Nothing could touch her. She moved so fast. She shot and threw knives fast, dropping Tailores by the second. In a matter of a minute, she finished the fight.

Raphael and Christina also stopped. They dropped their guard and applauded Janelle for her good fighting. They chose to escape now that they had a window.

Suddenly, the top right corner opened again. Only one person walked inside the room, wearing a brown suit with a bright colored shirt. The tie matched the colors well. The man standing in the room was known as the Tailores capo man, Rodent. He looked around, noticing that majority of the corpses were his men. Are they dead yet? Rodent asked himself while looking through each of the corpses.

Janelle knew Rodent well. She balled her fist. With her other hand, she signaled Raphael and Christina. She wanted this fight for herself. She screwed her face, and then she revealed herself. She yelled, We’re still alive, Rodent! You slimy, smug fox!

Rodent turned toward Janelle, and his eyes said it all. He was angrier than expected. He stomped his foot. You stupid son of a bitch! Can you guys even die right? All you KOL faggots continue meddling in our plans! You all had an opportunity of leaving as free people, but the Tailores has had enough of this game! We will wipe out everyone from your team! Starting with you!

Janelle liked the fury Rodent showed. The feeling is mutual.

Rodent picked up two of the many guns that were left behind by his dead team members, and he shot back at Janelle. When he ran out of bullets, he tossed the weapons at Janelle and grabbed more weapons. If you want something done correctly, do it yourself! He kept shooting until two bullets pierced his chest. Then he dropped his guns, posing while dropping down. He was shot more times in his head, and he died.

Before Janelle could celebrate, Raphael came back in the room, holding weapons. He hoped Janelle was still alive. Don’t worry, Janelle! I’m here. We’ll teach these Tailores a lesson.

Janelle stopped him and pointed toward the door. I told you, wait for me out there! It’s all good though. The lesson has been taught already. She searched Rodent’s body for anything she could put to use immediately. She didn’t find any information about Carlos or Luke. She did find an event that would happen tomorrow evening. Apparently, Rodent was on the guest list. I know where we’re headed next. Speaking of teaching them a lesson, we may have our chance sooner than later.

Well, come on then! Raphael exclaimed while holding the door for Janelle. I don’t like standing in the same spot for more than two minutes unless I’m having hardcore sex.

Janelle stopped looking at the invitation and squinted toward Raphael. Please. You sound better silent. Keep it that way.

Raphael took off his shirt momentarily to show her his tattoos. On his left arm, he had a picture of a woman with devil horns on her head and a staff in hand. She pointed her staff toward the next tat, Chinese symbols. The Chinese symbols translated meant, If you’re going through hell, keep on going. The tattoo on his other arm was a scenery picture with birds flying over an oasis. The writing above this tat was in English. It was his nickname, Rissah the overseer. He pointed to each of his tattoos.

Okay. You have two tattoos. That’s great. We don’t need to see those. Right, Christina?

Before Christina could respond, Raphael told her why he showed her the tat. These aren’t just any tattoos, Janelle. These show you why I am the way I am. I take pride in what I do and who I surround myself with. This has always been the—

Janelle finally walked through the door and led the way back up to the docks. She didn’t show off the invite yet.

Hey! Raphael called out, catching up to Janelle when they reached the outside. You listen to me when I talk to you! Whenever I speak, it’s importan—

Janelle stopped Raphael again and focused on Christina. We’re done here. We have a possible lead, 375 Nutley Road in Alderny Square. You must be ready by four the latest! She then looked toward Raphael and sized him up. And as for you, you’ll be lucky if I ever call you again for work. Acting like you have the answers for everything.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Take it easy, Janelle! Raphael responded sharply while getting closer. Then he held her arm for a split second. And how did you find that out?

Don’t worry about it. Just be ready for my call in the morning. Janelle then gave them specific instructions. Remember, we are keeping to the plan. We stay in separate hotels. This time, we’ll be in Alderny or Western Alderny. Anywhere in that range is good. Now Janelle showed them the invite she snagged from Rodent’s dead corpse. If you’d like to explore those areas before our little event, then do be my guest. We meet an hour before the event starts. Do I make myself clear?"

Christina answered immediately. Raphael took longer after examining the invitation. After taking some good time to think through the plan, he also gave his consent.

Janelle nodded. She turned around and hot-wired a car. She dropped Raphael off first at Drake Lane and Augustine. And then she drove further before dropping Christina off.

Before leaving, Christina said to Janelle, Call me early afternoon. Then we do some more investigating later. We don’t need him around as a chaperone. Just a thought. With those words, Christina walked away.

Janelle focused on the road, and then she drove away. She went to the third hotel. That may happen, Christina. Not sure yet.

    Chapter 2

    Just Before the Show

After reaching the hotel, Janelle got her room and went upstairs. She had room 304. Upon entering the room, she showered. It felt like forever since she had some personal time. She looked at herself in the mirror after taking a long shower. She saw heavy bags in her eyes, and she yawned. Then she closed her eyes and had visions of two years ago, the peak of the Tailores war.

She saw Claude, the KOL member from Magnolia, Texas, popping a couple of pills while holding his gun. He looked back toward her, ready for the next battle. She could hear his raspy voice, praising her for her dedication. You are one tough cookie, Ms. Bellatoni. Claude’s Southern accent was strong. Since you bailed me and Beatrix out, I came to Carson City. I’ll destroy whatever threat you have. It’s a token of my appreciation.

She envisioned her response to him. It’s nothing like Magnolia over here. You can’t just walk in their towns, hoods, and stir up trouble. There were only pockets of them in your city. We got hundreds living in apartments, owning stores, and running streets. I’m a badass, and I’m used to being outnumbered like this, so it doesn’t bother me. If your training hasn’t been efficient like mines, you will be eaten up alive.

She walked toward the bed and envisioned Claude’s response. They killed my brother! I’m taking as many of them with me as possible!

What if your actions backfire and you join your brother sooner than later?

Claude yelled as they walked through Fordknocks in Carson City, Have you lost someone that once looked up to you? Has the person you inspired been endangered and killed by these madmen? I’m running up on them no matter what town I’m in. Screw them! Let them go in their deathbeds sooner than most people. I’d be dammed if I lose yet another person because of them. They don’t care who they kill as long as it personally affects one of us. Don’t you get it?

Janelle nodded and gave her input. She knew she couldn’t stop him. I’ll teach you how things are done. She heard a sudden screeching noise as a bike spun out of control. She saw a bike heading in their direction. Jump out of harm’s way! Janelle exclaimed and grabbed Claude’s shoulder, pulling him to safety.

After she saved Claude, the bike ran straight into Fordknocks’s bakery. The biker was split in half, his bottom half near the bakery. The top half hit the pole and remained on the side of it. The bakery itself had minor damages, thanks to the bike coming to a sudden stop.

And there you go again, saving people’s lives! Now I owe you even more! Claude responded after realizing the gravity of what happened.

Janelle, however, had a bad feeling about this situation. It didn’t make sense as to why the biker spun out of control. She kept looking around until she saw the cause of the situation. Luke was in his car with his Tailores men, and he attempted a drive-by. Janelle was the intended target, but she wasn’t hit.

Claude, however, was shot at least four times before Luke drove off. He fell hard on the ground, looking dazed.

Janelle immediately rushed toward Claude and picked him up. She wanted to mention how she just mentioned being careful around here. Instead, she focused on getting him immediate help. The closest hospital over here was the one located on Cloud Street.

They got…me good. I hope…the Lord will take…me away…today. The pain…is just so…unbearable! Claude forced himself to speak.

Janelle reached the hospital with Claude, and then she stayed with him the entire time. When he was in a room, Janelle sat by his side and looked out the window toward the street. She could hear Claude continually fighting the intense pain surging through his body. She knew there wasn’t much she could do. Sorry, Claude. I will be back soon.

Janelle stepped out of the room and walked down the busy Cloud Street in search for a deli or flower shop. She found both quickly. She bought ones that she thought were the cutest yet masculine as well. She made her way out, and overheard a passenger arguing with the cabdriver.

The taxi driver yelled, You owe me extra for this nonsense! And that’s final!

The passenger held his hands up and argued back. Listen here, bozo! We pay the same price no matter what! Don’t be an asswipe! We only took longer than usual because we had to prepare ourselves!

The driver yelled back, his accent getting heavier by the second. Damn puto suto taking their time like they own me. Buy your own car next time! How about that, you pale poultry bastard? Don’t waste my fifteen minutes lounging and flirting! Time is money, and it doesn’t wait for no man!

Just like your receding hairline isn’t waiting for you!

Janelle heard enough of their argument. She left them and walked back toward the hospital. Soon, she was back in front of the room. She knocked, and a nurse came out, claiming that Claude will be okay. Janelle still wanted to personally see Claude, however.

The nurse almost allowed her in, but stopped and pointed. What the hell is happening over there! she yelled with all her might, scared at what she just witnessed.

Janelle stopped and looked where the nurse pointed. She saw danger instantly. Two Tailores members, led by Carlos Banderas, charged her way. Carlos himself ran in the staircase while the other Tailores continued charging at her.

Carlos and Luke are both in Carson City right now. Good! I’ll kill two birds with one stone. I’ll deal with your lackeys first! Janelle told herself as she prepared for a battle.

The Tailores stared her down with the same level of intensity she showed them. They stopped running and provoked her. It worked. She ran toward them at full speed and gave them the beatdown of their lives. As she pulverized them, two more snuck up behind the nurse and killed her. Then they walked in the room just when Janelle focused her attention their way. She saw the dead nurse and Claude’s door slamming shut.

She already knew what happened. She balled up her fists as she heard screams and more gunshots. She finished the first two Tailores henchmen and charged toward Claude’s room. Her time was limited.

You guys will pay for harming a defenseless man! I dare you heartless bastards try that same shit on me!

As she opened the door, she saw the next pair of Tailores finishing off Claude. They pointed their guns toward Janelle to no avail. Janelle reacted and jumped right when they shot her way. She hid behind the nurse’s desk for safety, and then shot back. She missed them the first couple of times, but finally caught one in the chest, killing him. The remaining Tailores member rushed her, but she shot him in the crotch. While he bent over, Janelle shot him in the head and finished him off. She paused for a couple of moments, waiting for another surprise attack. When she felt the coast was clear, she rushed toward the corpses surrounding Claude. Claude was also dead. She didn’t cry, but she felt bad.

I knew you shouldn’t have come here! I told you these people are on another level of ruthless! Janelle sharply turned back toward the door while it opened all of a sudden. Oh, shit. Janelle jumped behind the nurse’s desk again.

You see what you get when you mess with the Tailores! You a dead ho, courtesy of the Don Carlos Banderas!

Two more Tailores came shooting like crazy, not stopping until they reloaded. Janelle had a small opportunity. She shot, and one Tailores dodged. The other died. Janelle threw her empty gun and charged the remaining Tailores. She disarmed him, twisted his arm, and forced him to shoot himself. She confiscated all the weapons while she had the chance, and then she left the area.

Thanks for participating in the Fordknocks hospital massacre! Whoever wants in must contact their local supervisor. Oh, and fuck you to the Tailores! Janelle exclaimed while slamming the door.

Janelle’s vision ended, and she woke up, sitting in a chair by the television. There was a mobster movie playing, where the don was talking with his maids about a hit he called on a rival gang. The maid appeared interested but then suddenly started crying. Janelle hated the movie, so she turned the TV off.

I made a promise that I would take down Carlos and Luke after what they did that night. It’s been over a year and some change since that’s happened. I still haven’t dropped either man. You would think that I’m losing my touch. Janelle shook her head. That’s not the case. I only get better and more efficient as time progresses. The time is now! First, Carlos will die. Then it will be his love partner, Luke. And when I’m finished with them, I’m coming for you, Gloria! Janelle slammed her hands on the bed.

She fell asleep and soon woke up when she heard banging on her door. She jumped up and grabbed her gun. She walked toward the door and opened it, sticking her gun toward the face of the woman at the door.

Christina held her hand up, shook, but also prepared. Don’t kill me, Janelle! I’m a friend! Can’t you see by the way I carry myself?

Janelle stopped and dropped her guard. She looked behind Christina, expecting Raphael being behind her. To her surprise, he wasn’t. You came a little early, don’t you think? Janelle told Christina, grabbing her towel and different lotions.

I told you, this is an important mission. I had to come early. They’ve been coming at us with everything but the kitchen sink. I’m surprised they didn’t follow us when we dropped off Ralphie! Christina plopped down on the nearest seat, knowing that Janelle wasn’t ready yet. I’ll let you go and freshen up. We have a long day ahead of us.

Janelle nodded and walked toward the bathroom. She wrapped the towel around her. She closed the door behind her. She came out an hour later, refreshed and ready. She noticed Christina had dozed off. She tapped Christina on the shoulder. I thought you and I would connect later, otherwise I would’ve been ready.

Christina woke up and told Janelle what happened immediately. Our boss contacted me so early in the morning, I didn’t even have time to think. I don’t know if you got the call either, but it appears you didn’t. I’m surprised seeing that you two usually contact each other daily. Almost like a married couple. Anyways, I’ll show you. She took out her phone and showed the call and text messages.

Janelle nodded and responded, Apparently we’re not only going after Carlos and Luke anymore. Cool. At first, she was pissed she didn’t get this info from her boss. After thinking it through, however, this news played into Janelle’s personal plan. She got dressed quickly and grabbed everything she needed. I guess that Uber ride was worth it. Thanks for coming so soon. Janelle walked out of the door.

Christina followed behind Janelle, still shocked by the text. Imagine if we suddenly run into her while going after them. Don’t you see? They feel the pressure from us.

I tell you the truth, Janelle quickly responded. Gloria coming this way makes my life way easier. After what she’s done, she and I will fight. But first, we have that event later. We should do what we do best. Are you down?

Christina nodded. Come on, Janelle. Isn’t that why I’m here, and why we both said that we wouldn’t bring Ralphie with us? Christina looked rather disappointed that Raphael wouldn’t join them. Speaking of him, are you sure you don’t want him helping us? I mean, that’s an extra body. As annoying as he can be, I’d—

Janelle stopped Christina right there and replied, We won’t mention him until we pick him up later. Let him get some rest. I rather go alone or with you before I choose that goofball!

Very well then. As you command, darling.

The duo grabbed the car and drove toward the New Jersey Penn Station area. They found parking on Rose Road and continued their investigation on foot. This part of town was known for gang activity in the night, and the day was usually the opposite. The Tailores leaders had recently bought Sherman Studios located by the train station. Speaking of which, they noticed a Tailores walk toward the studio.

Janelle tugged on Christina’s shoulder. You know what to do. We will follow him, whoop his ass, then take his uniform!

At this moment, Raphael called them ten times in a row. He also texted them, wondering where they were. After constant pestering from Raphael, Christina and Janelle decided they’d have him tag along on the mission. They looked toward each other, upset yet willing.

Where’s your car? Raphael asked. Let me know where it’s parked and I’ll find my way there. You wouldn’t even need to pick me up.

Janelle rolled her eyes, and she looked back toward Christina. It pained her mind and heart likewise. I can’t believe I’m doing this. Janelle then gave Raphael the information he needed. Hurry up, fool. We’re going toward Sherman Studios. We hitting the big boys now. Oh, and one more thing when you get here. Don’t fuck it up for us. She hung up and focused on the building.

Christina nodded. I felt that one. Hopefully he doesn’t take it the wrong way.

The duo eased their way toward the building slowly. They walked in with their badges visible. Upon entering, they noticed it wasn’t like their expectations. It looked like they walked into a dance studio mixed with a gym. The people working out weren’t Tailores members, but casual visitors of the fitness center.

Well, this was a turn of events… Janelle refrained from getting angry. She made her way toward the elevator bank beyond the gym.

Immediately afterward, a gym instructor wearing extra tight clothing walked from the weight room toward Janelle. He walked her way while shuffling. Sweat poured from his body and landed in a line around him. He stopped when he reached Janelle. He lifted his eyebrow and touched her hand while asking, Can I help you?

Can you help yourself? Janelle sharply asked back. When he wouldn’t move, she then answered him, I don’t need your help.

Dante placed his hand on his hips, and then he twirled. You two obviously are looking for somebody here. Otherwise, you wouldn’t come to Brother Burner’s Fitness. Dante continued being his positive form while he watched them. He smiled and placed his hand on his cheeks. Then he winked at them while also blowing kisses.

Janelle froze immediately, baffled at his actions. She noticed that Christina was more receptive in a positive way than she was. Okay. Janelle took a step back, and she’d rather have Christina deal with him.

Christina walked toward Dante, reading Janelle’s mind. I’ll take care of this. With pleasure. She had a brighter personality compared to Janelle’s cold reactions. She talked with Dante. Please forgive my client. She’s acting like she still lives in the nineties. She should be used to this kind, open, and expressive character you display. Christina introduced herself and showed Dante a picture of Carlos. We are doing a private investigation, and we must ask him some serious questions. We can find him in this building, or are we looking in the wrong area?

Dante made a high-pitched moan while a wide grin came across his face. He then rested his head on his left arm, which was rested on Christina’s shoulder. Oh, darling! You mean that you’re looking for the don. My God, you took such a sexy picture of him! B-E-A-utiful! Dante exclaimed as he placed his hands on his lips. He then blew a kiss to the picture before balling up his fists. What I wouldn’t do for a night with him.

Christina continued encouraging him, but she felt a little disturbed by his attitude. Do you know where we could find him?

Janelle felt a type of way, so she looked away. She shook her head and turned toward the window. Just when she thought this couldn’t get any better, she saw Raphael heading toward them. He had just opened the door. Oh my God! And now the calvary has finally arrived. Sergeant Doofy for the space cadet patrol team is here!

Christina ignored Janelle’s statement about Raphael and continued talking with Dante. I’m sure he’s a great man that’s done great things for the community around here. We’ve heard from our sources that he’s investing in the lesser fortunate areas in Empire City. Alderny and Downtown Empire City are known areas with extremely high crime rates. But once again, I’m asking where can—

Dante then showed Christina the same flyer Janelle showed last night. This time, there was an update to the address. The address was in the heart of Downtown Empire City on Journal Square and Robinhood Road. Haven’t you heard about this event? This year, the don himself is personally supporting the Benedict Ball, and he’s making it better than last year’s version of the show.

Just before Raphael joined them, Christina rushed toward Janelle since Janelle had the original flyer. Christina grabbed it and showed it to Dante. We have this flyer, too, but the address is different here. How come?

Raphael finally joined the group. He greeted the reluctant Janelle first. He walked toward Christina next and hugged her while stating his feelings. You guys left me hanging in the hotel, and that’s not cool at all! I thought we— Raphael then looked toward the gym instructor and jumped back. He examined his outfit. And talk about flamboyant. I see you two are making all types of friends. Power to you, ladies.

Dante giggled and placed his hand on Raphael’s upper chest. And who is this hunk? Mmm. Dante tried touching Raphael’s face, but couldn’t. He got offended and sharply said, Mijo! Don’t be so square. I’m only messing with you. I don’t bite unless I’m prompted. He extended his hand toward Raphael again, this time not as flirtatious as before. I’m the top manager in this establishment. You can call me the dirty dancing Dante! He twirled again.

Raphael was usually outgoing and friendly, but this was too much for him. He had a small backpack with him. He opened it immediately after watching Dante. He took out some meds and water. I don’t normally do this in public, but today is another day. He took a pill, and his anxiety cooled down significantly. He grabbed Dante’s hand. Nice to meet you, gay… I mean Gabriel.

Dante was baffled to the point he pulled his hand away from Raphael. What did you call me? he asked and switched his attention back toward Christina, pouting. He could see Christina was the voice of reason for the group. How rude! Next time you come here, please only bring yourself. Don’t bring the lone quiet wolf with you, and definitely don’t bring Johnny Bravo.

Raphael took offense, and he fired back. Johnny Bravo? Hey, at least I get the foxy mamas! You are the foxy mama… Wait a minute? The fuck I just say? No, scratch that! You are the Drag Race reject wearing Speed Racer’s tights!

Oh! Please, darling! You’re so insecure and petty, I wouldn’t put it past me that you trapped so far in the closet, R. Kelly couldn’t sing it! I can smell the fragrance all over you. Dante acted like he smelled something bad.

Raphael stopped him right there. Hell naw! I don’t visit the same border lines, dude. I’m just a beautiful extra-light-skinned boy from the South. My pops would crack the whip if there was even a hint of homosexuality in my character. Raphael depicted it with his hands. Only a hint of it. Same with my brothers as—

"Oh! Your daddy cracks that whip, doesn’t he? Dante moaned again while checking Raphael out again. And here I was, thinking you were the alpha male. The one in command. But here you are, confessing you’re a bottom boy. Ugh, such a turnoff. I’ve totally lost my interest now. Please, if you can excuse yourself."

Raphael almost got in Dante’s face, ready for a fight. If it wasn’t for Christina stopping him, he would’ve attacked. You say that again, and you’re going down!

Oooooo! Me going down? I’d like that, but not with you, boo. Please stop with your advances. I’ve already curved you more than your curved hairline, Dante responded.

Raphael turned red and barked at Dante. I will toss you on the ground with one hand, then you will be on the bottom! And when I’m finished, I’ll be the one on top! Raphael looked serious and frustrated to the point he didn’t even realize what he just said.

Christina allowed this argument between them two to continue, not choosing a side. In fact, she found this argument humorous. She looked toward Janelle and winked.

Janelle, however, acted opposite. She stepped in the middle of Dante and Raphael while Christina watched. That’s enough from the both of you, Janelle exclaimed, and then she slapped Raphael on the back of his head. She held Raphael responsible for the entire argument. She then added, Please, Raphael! Calm down! And as for you, gym instructor, you just finished stating that he’s hosting an event in Downtown Empire City. Same time, but different location. Any reason why for that sudden change?

Dante remained cool, and he twirled again. He chose to sit by the treadmill and bike section. He looked away from Raphael and focused on Janelle. He replied, I wish I can tell you, but I don’t even know why he changed location. Everyone who had an invite got this new flyer sent to them by mail in the morning. If you got that invite, you may have the other one coming later in the day. But I guess it depends on how often you check your mail. Dante rolled his eyes. A couple of moments later, he twirled. This time, he ignored Raphael and the look of disgust. It’s a big event that will get crowded easily. With these tickets, you are allowed one guest. If one of your friends needs an extra invitation, I’d be willing to give my guest spot to her instead of my darling. He looked toward Christina.

Christina liked that idea, and she immediately was down for it. She passed Dante her information, and then she hugged him. She thanked him for the invitation. You really are clutch, and you are so beautiful, aren’t you?

You don’t say. Dante then continued explaining little details of the event. Carlos will definitely be there. You can look for him after the show. But be advised, you may need a change of outfit. I’m not certain if what you’re wearing would be considered business casual. Just be on the safe side. Dante walked away, twitching his body. He also held his hand out like a queen. I’ll be looking forward to see how you lovely ladies come through. I know you’ll find dazzling outfits. Lose the loser, however. You’re better off without the human walrus.

As Dante disappeared in the sauna area, Raphael got up. He didn’t take those words too kindly. He balled his fists, ready for a fight. He better hope he don’t see me when I get there. Otherwise, I’ll knock the fruit out his cup and turn him back to the dark side. He won’t like the pounding I’ll give him. That pounding will be so hard—

Janelle slapped him on the head again. Stop it! We already got what we needed. We’ll let him take us right into Carlos’s hands. This is our best opportunity. I will not let your homophobic ass ruin it for us.

Christina felt accomplished, and she winked at Janelle again. She congratulated herself on a job well-done. I’d like to thank myself for being such an extroverted people person. I’m sorry they didn’t make our new friend comfortable, and almost lost our chance in finding Carlos. I think I deserve all the credit.

Janelle’s response was I’m extroverted too. I extrovert my foot in people’s ass if they mess with me. And I don’t have time for gimmicks and other bullshit.

Where to next then, Queen Janelle?

    Chapter 3

    I’ll Participate Too: Ralph MC

Instead of staying in Sherman Studios, they decided they’d wait until the nighttime where they’ll definitely catch him. They stood on Main Boulevard for the moment and then walked toward the car. While walking back, they saw a couple of people arguing on the corner. One man looked like a gang member, wearing all blue. The older woman wore red and black. They yelled at each other, using all types of slang. They moved their hands while yelling, and it almost looked like they would fight each other. The trio didn’t even bother getting involved.

They reached the car, and Janelle decided she’d drive. We should get new threads, but first, let me ask you two. Would you like to go to Carson City real quick?

    Raphael shrugged. Your choice.

Christina, however, thought about it. She came up with a better decision. How about after we stop Carlos, we travel to Carson City. We’ll keep big boss updated. What do you guys think about that? Much better, right?

Very well then, Janelle quickly responded. We’ll shop for threads, but make it quick. Both of you. Make it quick. Remember, this isn’t time for fun. We have a set time which we must kill Carlos and Luke. We must keep to our deadline, and you both know that when it’s crunch time, I go hard. I must go hard! It’s either go hard or go home!

Christina stopped her there. Please, Janelle. Save that tough-girl attitude for someone else. I’ve known you for a long time. You can tone down a little bit. At least for me.

This was just the beginning of the day. They spent their time traveling to different malls and shopping for clothes while killing time. Before they knew it, the event was about to begin. They reached the Benedict Ball, and they realized the line was longer than expected. They waited for at least an hour until they finally reached the front. When they reached the front, they only had to wait another ten minutes until the security gave the word.

Janelle was the only one of the trio who wore the same clothes from earlier. Christina wore a nice blue and black dress that showed off her curves. She had the matching makeup with designer heel shoes. Raphael wore a fresh red button-down with designer jeans and shoes. He also wore glasses that added to the look.

While walking in, they all received stare-downs from random people inside. The attention made them uncomfortable. It almost seemed like everybody knew who they were. As they closed in the front, they ignored the constant staring.

When they reached the back, they stood in front of another security guard. This guard didn’t recognize them as members of the guest list. He stopped them and stared each of them down, starting with Christina. He looked her up and down like she was a snack. He was indeed attracted to her, and he almost forgot about the others with her. Then he stared at Janelle next since she was a woman. Janelle was too plain for him. He looked away quickly. As for Raphael, he glanced at him and almost didn’t let him in. Who invited you guys?

Janelle showed her flyer, angry. "What the hell do you mean who sent us? We have this invitation. That should be enough."

The guard stopped her there. He then added, You also need a reference who can vouch for you. That’s the new rules. If Carlos the don doesn’t personally know you or one of his people haven’t placed you on their guest list, you can’t go on any further. It’s either that or you are participating in tonight’s battle.

While they were deciding on how they’d respond, Dante showed up just in time. And he was dressed to impress. He wore a nice red and black suit with makeup and eyeliner. His goatee and mustache combination was on point. He snickered while walking toward the trio. After looking at all of their outfits, he hugged Christina tightly. Then he turned toward the guard and pointed her out. She’s on my guest list, he told the guard.

The guard nodded, and then he gave Christina entrance. He also licked his lips while saying, Okay, beautiful. You have been sponsored. Enjoy the show. This only left the guard with the other two. His attitude changed back to normal. Like I said, the only other way I can let the both of you in is if you’re participating in the show. Luckily enough for you two, one of the contestants had an unfortunate incident. We tried contacting him, but there hasn’t been any response from him. Since it appears he won’t be participating in the competition, one of you can have his spot. I have the power of granting that spot to anybody. The other who won’t participate will be the guest. That’s the best offer, otherwise, you both enjoying from the sidelines.

And this is what type of contest? Janelle asked.

Tonight’s theme is rap, seeing that Carlos the don is a huge fan of the genre. He requested a three-round rap battle with the winners advancing to the finals. The winner gets a prize of whatever the don has chosen. Now be advised, some raps may contain sharp disses at the opponent in them. You must wow the crowd with your rhymes, charisma, and style. That’s how this will work.

Janelle already made her mind up. This wasn’t an event she’d participate in. She was already considering a new plan that would get them inside without making a fool out of either of them. She tugged at Raphael’s shoulders. Come on, she said, we’ll find another way inside there. Whether by force or by—

Raphael had another idea, however. There was a new spark in his eye after hearing about the competition. He stopped Janelle in her tracks. No! This is our opportunity! he told Janelle while receiving confirmation from the security officer.

Really! Janelle exclaimed, shaking her head. Do you really want to make a fool out of both of us? Or either of us? I know you’re crazy, but even you can’t be serious.

Raphael, however, persisted. He whispered, This is our opportunity at snagging your boy Carlos! Do you really think it’s wise we pass up this opportunity with a plan that can surely bring attention our way? Do you think he will have his guard up against someone who’s participating in a rap battle? Think about it for a moment or two.

Janelle paused and grunted. She couldn’t believe that Raphael was right for a change. She knew where this was headed. She let out a loud sigh. Why do I even bother sometimes?

After entering the VIP section, the duo noticed a sharp difference between the main room and the VIP room. People in the main room danced and mingled. People here smoked and vibed to the music. Or they had constant bottle service while the stage was getting set up for the competition. There were tables all around a little dance floor which no one in the VIP used. They saw Christina and Dante sitting at one table close to the front. The first table in the front was reserved for Carlos and his closest followers. They noticed that neither Carlos nor his closest followers had arrived yet.

While he observed the area, the MC hosting the event hopped on the mike. He tested the mike before speaking. Welcome, all! We will be starting the event shortly. If you are one of the eight participating in the event, line up by the bathroom! The MC did a spin move before he stepped from the stage.

As much as she didn’t want to participate, Janelle followed Raphael reluctantly. She noticed the other seven participants in the event lining up by the bathroom. She stood in the back of the line behind the seventh participant. Raphael stood beside her. She noticed Christina and Dante both looking her way, and they were apparently in shock that she was also participating in the event. She shook her head again and looked away, ignoring their cheers for as long as possible. She even tried ignoring Raphael’s statements.

I hate you, she told Raphael silently. I really, really hate you.

Raphael, astonished, placed his hand on his chest and acted shot. Oh, no! The horror! He dropped the act and spoke seriously. "We should figure
