    We’re Not Finished

    ELLA

From where she stood, Ella could only see portions of base camp—and what little she saw, she wished she hadn’t. Trees blocked most of her view, but looking through the spaces between them provided her with an idea of how terrible the battle’s aftermath was. She couldn’t even see any tents. Were they still standing? Was everything destroyed?

Hang on, Shay. Ella’s arm trembled, weakened from carrying Shay’s limp body for so long. She didn’t know how much longer she’d last before her muscles gave out, unable to lug any more dead weight.

Where the hell was Lin, and why hadn’t he returned? What took so long? It’s not like they had all the time in the world. This was Shay, one of their friends who had been shot.

    And now, there was Matt.

    You okay? she asked him.

    He nodded. Yeah. Fine.

But the grimace on his face told a different story. He was in a lot of pain, and he needed help just as much as his sister. Ella wasn’t sure what they would do if there was nobody left to aid them.

Maybe that’s why Lin hasn’t come back yet—he can’t find anybody.

That was a terrifying thought. She cringed, trying not to consider the outcome of Shay’s fate should there be a lack of medical professionals on base. The sooner they could dig those shotgun pellets out and stitch Shay back up, the sooner she could breathe easier, rest, and regain her strength.

The realization that she hadn’t heard any gunfire or blasts in the last few minutes struck her. Was it over? Was Lin okay?

Let’s move closer, she told Matt as she ambled towards camp, dragging a lifeless Shay with her. Shay’s dead weight tugged at Ella’s shoulder and arm. They trembled, her muscles too weak and strength too little to support Shay.

She didn’t bother seeing if Matt followed; she knew he would. He’d follow Shay to the ends of the Earth. She was all he had left, and vice versa. A pang shot through Ella’s stomach at the thought of Shay and Matt having each other after all the chaos and death they’d witnessed. Thinking about them only made her wish she could locate her mom. At least find out her fate.

    This is my fault.
