    ELLA

Seeing the laser beams headed straight for her pod, Ella closed her eyes, figuring this was it. She was dead. After that first wave Xak’thul sent towards the small fleet of Kyborgs, they retaliated by doing the same to Ella and the other members of the resistance fighting in stolen Kyborg pods. With her shield down, there was no way those blue streaks of light would just bounce off; they were going to strike the center of the windshield head-on. All she could do was wait, because there was no possible way she could turn the pod around, or fly in a different direction; the lasers traveled too quickly.

Glass shattered in an instant. Reflexively, Ella raised her arms to shield her face from the broken shards exploding in every direction. One blue beam zipped mere inches past her head, striking the rear of the pod. Sparks popped like a small cluster of firecrackers—minus the attached noisiness—and the rear of the vessel burst into a tiny-but-growing ball of flames.

The pod wobbled back and forth, and her mistake was apparent: she shouldn’t have removed her hand from the electrified orb. Now that her hand was no longer connected to the glowing sphere, she’d lost all control and plummeted to Earth.

    Oh, shit! she cried out.

She hadn’t thought of the repercussions of shielding her face; it was just instinctual.

WHAM! Striking the ground, Ella was ejected from her seat, banging her head against the metal roof before falling again, crashing against the solid surface of the front seat.

Ow! she howled, rubbing the tender spot on her head that felt like someone had clocked her with a sledgehammer. Fingers touching something wet, she pulled her hand away, examining it. Blood.

    Well, that’s just great.

Pungent smoke caused her to choke, then cough, her lungs protesting. Instead of bothering with the glowing orb to open the side door, she climbed through the glassless windshield. Sliding across the pointed hood of the pod, she collapsed on the grassy lawn.

Keep going. Keep moving, her mind told her. Don’t stop.

She needed to reach the resistance, help them with the fight as much as possible. But she was having trouble, visually. Was that double the amount of pods, or was she imagining things?

    The outer perimeter—what was
