Ella, Shay, and Lin are on the run from the psychotic people who kidnapped them, and now, with Shay wounded and bleeding, they have a limited amount of time to reach base camp for help. Amara barely survives an encounter with a Kyborg pod, only to discover another tragic event has occurred. Though injured, Matt has no other choice but to fight a zombie in the house he planned on using for shelter. Major Cantrell tries to raise the resistance's declining morale.

    Aftermath

    ELLA

Nobody breathed. Nobody moved. Nobody wanted to risk being caught by the psychotic cult members outside the house Ella, Shay, and Lin used as a temporary hideout.

Ella wished the crazies would just move on, search some other place. But her wish wasn’t a guarantee. These people were ruthless and would stop at nothing to find her and the others. Why they were so hell-bent on torturing them she didn’t know. Maybe they thought it was funny, because they were sick, sadistic assholes who got off on torturing people. Or maybe they didn’t like the idea that someone finally escaped from their camp. Whatever their reason was, she didn’t want to stick around and find out what they’d do if they got their grimy hands on her, Shay, or Lin. They proved how far they would go back in that forest. Now, instead of just letting her and her friends go, they decided that stalking was the best decision.

    These people were demented.

Ella couldn’t figure out their reasoning for following, but maybe that was because she was sane. Their leader—whatever his name was, she didn’t care—was the problem. He was coercing these people, his followers, down a dangerous-and-deadly path. And they had no idea. Either they were too stupid to figure it out or too scared to say something, fearful their redneck leader would kill them.

Or maybe there was a third option: they knew but didn’t care.

Voices carried from outside. Ella breathed a little harder knowing they hadn’t entered the house...yet. She hoped they wouldn’t bother, but if the group decided to start kicking in doors, she, Lin, and Shay were totally screwed.

I think they’re leaving, Lin whispered so quietly Ella barely heard.

Shay slumped against Ella. She was becoming dead weight, and Ella wasn’t sure she’d make it back to camp. How the hell was she supposed to carry her that far? Even with Lin’s help, she hoped and prayed they wouldn’t run into any of these psychotic people, zombies, or aliens, because there was no way they could protect themselves and Shay, and fight back. They needed to get back to camp in one piece, so Shay could receive the medical attention she desperately needed. Ella feared if they didn’t get Shay back to camp soon, she’d bleed out and die.

That was a terrifying thought—one Ella attempted to shake from her head.

The voices outside faded a bit more, but still weren’t completely gone. What were they doing? More than likely deciding whether breaking in some of the houses was a good idea, or not. On top of all that had happened, Ella’s heart and nerves couldn’t handle any more surprises.
