Escape

ELLA

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Ella’s fingertips traced over the shiny, silver exterior of the downed ship. She casually ambled around the front to the other side, checking for damage. So far, she hadn’t seen any.

Any idea how we get inside? Ella asked Agent Humphries as she continued surveying the pod.

He shook his head. Not a clue. His gaze never met Ella’s; he was too busy watching the wooded area surrounding them.

Might be a good thing, Ella thought, in case the aliens catch wind that one of their own crashed and they start looking for the ship.

Other than the pod having zero damage, something else was nagging at Ella’s mind about the ship: how the hell was she going to open the damn thing? It wasn’t like there was a door handle, or a flashing ENTER sign. Thinking back to when the grotesque creature kidnapped Shay, Ella remembered there was some sort of side entrance that magically appeared in a liquid form, then shifted and shaped into stairs.

If she wasn’t so tired, hungry, and frustrated, Ella would probably laugh at how crazy that sounded.

Using her fingers to press around the general area of where the door should be, Ella tried to figure out how to open the pod. After several minutes, she hadn’t succeeded. But there was no way she was giving up that easily. Ella knew that if she couldn’t get this ship in the air, she could kiss any chance of saving Shay goodbye.

Her fingers grazed over an area about halfway down the pod and, suddenly, the side of the ship liquefied, quivered, then transformed into a short, metallic staircase.

Yes! Ella squealed with delight, elated she figured out the hardest part.

Unless flying the pod was even more difficult…

One thing she wasn’t expecting when the door opened was a dead alien.
