CHAPTER 1: I Should Have Been a Statistic
Challenges
Everyone has challenges in their life, and this chapter is about identifying those challenges in order to understand the effect they have had, because that’s the only way to overcome them. David’s story is of a tragic and abusive childhood, told in explicit detail. David Goggins was born in 1975 in Buffalo, New York, to Trunnis Goggins and his girlfriend, Jackie. Trunnis was a brutal man, who regularly beat his common-law wife and two sons, Trunnis Jr. and David. He had purposely refused to marry Jackie so that she would have no claim to any of his property should she decide to leave him. He forced the three of them (the boys and Jackie) to work late into the night, every night, in his shady business, and the slightest mistake or even a glimmer of defiance would provoke a cruel beating.
As the abuse became more brutal and life-threatening, Jackie made the difficult decision to leave Trunnis. David was just eight years old at the time, yet he jumped at the opportunity to get away from the father he hated. Though he was free from the abuse, the damage was done. It would take David many more years to finally face the demons produced by these early experiences. And, the difficulties were not over for Jackie and David (Trunnis Jr. returned to live with his
