    Preface

In 2013, I was completing a year-long Certificate in Positive Psychology program being taught by one of the leading teachers in the positive psychology movement, Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar. I do a lot of intuitive work as a Transformational Energy Coach, working with people on their limiting beliefs and the road blocks in their life by looking at the energetic cause. I can read the energy of a person or situation. I went into the positive psychology program to learn more about the scientifically proven side of happiness, gratitude and resilience; fully expecting to be challenged in some of my beliefs and experiences along the way. But to my surprise that didn’t happen. Well, not until the eighth month of the program and a module on Evidence-Based Coaching.

Here is what I wrote to my classmates on February 19, 2013:

In Module 8.1, Tal said that positive self-talk in the mirror doesn’t work. Since Tal has mentioned the and approach in so many things, I was stunned that he just flat out said affirmations don’t work. Well, based on my personal experience they sure do work. And it is hard to fathom that my success with affirmations is due to the caveat that positive self-talk only helps those with high self-esteem to begin with. You see, I only tried affirmations (which I had long believed to be a load of crap!) when I was at my lowest point. All of my thoughts seemed focused on my own demise. I couldn’t look out a window without imagining myself hanging from the trees I saw. I couldn’t look at my own face in the mirror without wanting to spit at it. Hardly a position of high self-esteem. But that is when I started doing positive affirmations and they worked for me. It wasn’t always pleasant and it wasn’t an overnight fix – but they sure as hell helped me. I don’t need a control group to realize I’m still here.

In honor of this module bothering me, I’ve written my first ebook, 200 Powerful Positive Affirmations and 6 Simple Tips to Put Them to Work. So, thanks for pissing me off, Tal. I hope there is more of that to come.

    ~Andy
