Summary of All Fall Down - Instaread Summaries

    Book Overview

Allison Weiss is dealing with problems in every area of her life. Her marriage is starting to fall apart, she suspects her husband may be having an affair, her daughter is temperamental and difficult to manage, her father suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, and her job is demanding and time-consuming. Pills prescribed for back pain are the beginning of her downfall. She becomes addicted to the pills and cannot stop taking them. As time goes by, she convinces more doctors that she needs the pills. She moves up to stronger medication going from Percocet to Vicodin to Oxycontin.

Troubles increase for Allison when she takes pills combined with wine at a birthday dinner party for her husband, Dave. She is impaired by the drugs and alcohol. This causes her to embarrass herself in front of her friends and family. Dave and Allison have an argument. She tells him she is overwhelmed and needs help with her daily responsibilities. Rather than help her, Dave blames her problems on the pills she takes. Soon after, Allison’s addiction escalates when she discovers that she can buy the painkillers anonymously online. She no longer has to rely on doctors to prescribe the pills for her.

Allison’s father is experiencing a decline in his health. He becomes confused at a birthday party and causes a scene. Allison takes him home and finds her parents’ house a mess. She cleans it up for them, but is feeling very stressed. She steals some Oxycontin from their medicine cabinet. She rationalizes her behavior by telling herself she needs these pills in order to deal with all of her responsibilities.

Allison appears on a television panel as part of her job. Afterward, she is proud of herself and feels that she has done
