Preface
This is a work of fiction but is based on the life of a woman who experienced most of these things in her life. Bi-Polar is a treatable disease with medication and proper medical care. It is nothing to be afraid of or to shun. The people who are ill with this disease are like people who are ill with any other disease. They need support, love, and friendship. I wrote this book for Ariel who was suddenly afflicted with bi-polar and lost everything in her life due to her family’s ignorance. I was a friend of hers and I feel that her story should be told for the purpose of the enlightening of the general public.
Acknowledgment
I thank my friends who helped me to see that I have the ability and the courage to face the bad things and to enjoy the good things.
I wish to thank Ariel who taught me about bi-polar disorder and gave me the enlightenment that comes with knowledge, the opportunity to see her strength, and the forgiving spirit that resided in her heart and soul.
Chapter One
Ariel was tied down to the hospital bed. She was raving and fighting the restraints they had placed on her wrists and ankles. The nurse assigned to her gave her a shot of something to calm her. In her lucid moments, she wondered how this could happen to her. She was very afraid. She didn’t understand what was happening to her. She didn’t want to slip away from the reality of this world but she couldn’t seem to help it. How did it begin, she thought. She remembered that she began to feel very anxious, tense and she had suspicions of people that she had never had before. She did go to many doctors; they tried but none of their pills helped her. Eventually, she blacked out and ended up in Madison Hospital on the Psychiatric Wing. She had lost all memory of why she was here or even how she was transported here. Ariel could feel her mind calming again; she thought that the peace, the feeling of well being that she received from the shot was worth the restraints and the medicine they gave her that made her so sick. Her arms and legs stopped pulling at the restraints; she was falling asleep slowly. She liked that too. It gave her time to think about the way things were in the past and were now. She liked these rational moments.
At times, she would wonder why her husband didn’t come to see her. Not seeing him made her feel very insecure. None of her family came to see her. She rationalized that the doctor had ordered no visitors. She was sure that was it; her family loved her. They wouldn’t have stayed away if they could come to help her. She was sure that was true.
The doctor had mentioned something about her husband; he told her that Pete was angry because she became ill. Ariel heard him but she didn’t believe him. Pete would never be angry with her for becoming ill. Would he? Maybe he would, she thought. He expected her behavior to be impeccable. She would always become agitated when she thought of Pete;
