As long as she agreed to let the others in the group use her characters in cameo roles. Bronn agreed in a flash. Bronn is a woman of a certain age, as they say in books. Bronn and the other group members wanted to publish as many books as possible which led to a group decision to focus on writing short stories. That way Bronn and her friends could get more stories written and published for you to read. CHAPTER 1

Denise sat waiting for her friend and confidant Miriam in the warm winter sun that was occasionally peeking through the cloud cover. She looked around the over patrons of the Eastland Shopping Complex and wondered what her future held. Had it only been four months since she had seen Arnold on his way when the judge had signed the order that meant their might-be marriage was over. Now was her time. No longer did she have to always be home just in case he decided that he wanted a home-cooked meal. She didn’t even want to think about the other things he often demanded of her.

Miriam came hustling up and apologised for being late. Denise just waved her hand, knowing that if her best friend arrived on time it would be the first time ever. They had been best friends since they had met in grade one that was more years ago than the Denise wanted to remember. She was only thirty-six which wasn’t old. But it did tell the story of the years she had wasted in a marriage that wasn’t going anywhere. Time to move on. Time to get the advice that only lifelong friends were able to hand out.

So what are you going to do? Asked Miriam after the waitress had taken their orders and moved over to the barista to place them. You’ve been fizzing about ever since your divorce. You have to decide to do something. I enjoy sitting here having coffee with you, but I have Justin to go home to and three kids to ride herd on. You’ve still got your career. The one that you worked your butt off for all the way through university. Why not see if there’s a way that you can make use of that.

Denise thought about what her friend and just said. She was a Fine arts graduate. An interior decorator. A very good one until Arnold had insisted that he earned enough money and told her that she should stay home and become a decoration herself. Which she had done for eight boring years until she finally made the decision that she wanted her life back.

"It’s been too long Miriam. Everything’s changed. Where would I find clients? She asked.

It doesn’t have to be in the city. Miriam told her. Since the Central Governing Council has been establishing Resumes and allowing people to come in from the countries that were destroyed during the Reprisals, there will be lots of people who need advice on designing the layouts for their homes and businesses. Don’t you have a relative or friend that’s just left the army and now runs a bookshop somewhere down in western Victoria?

Denise sipped at her latte and thought about what her friend just said. She did have a cousin of some sort down somewhere the other side of Ballarat. Maybe she would invite itself down to where Constance was living. Even if she didn’t need anything done for herself maybe she knew someone that did.

I knew you were useful for something, she said to Miriam. There is an idea in what you just suggested. When I get home, I’ll give my Aunt Millie call and get Connie’s phone number. It’s been years since we’ve been in contact but it’s worth a try. Thanks friend. For the suggestion and for being a friend. I was starting to sink into a hole and you’ve just dragged me out. Now I’m going to love you and leave you. I’ve got things to do and places to go. She stood and bent down to give her friend a
