About this ebook

The drug lord organizes an expedition team, to allow the musically talented Pluck Princess to reach the upper floors of Towerld and to perform in the mysterious ritual to be held.

As his master, Wendy tries to correct the errors of his ways, but his new attitude has become too much for anyone to tame.

As Wendy resorts to her deadly maneuver, Hector_1304 uses the Pluck Princess and his hidden feelings for her as a political leverage to deliver the unforgiving and unforgivable ultimatum.

    Part One

    ---01---

It has been approximately three months (in Towerld Standard Time) since the expedition team (led by Mary Teana Blockheart, the Pluck Princess) left the farm floor.

I do not keep count or time of anything in particular, so I do not know how many floors we have visited since then. The expedition team might have cleared about one floor every 10 days. We might have passed through about 10 levels total so far. Even though that sounds like a lot of floors, that still does not make me feel as if I have accomplished quite a bit. The top floor (the existence of which I am not even sure of) of Towerld still seems like more than a world away. If there are ten thousand tiers inside Towerld, then I have just cleared less than one percent of the journey. It is just unimaginably far away.

So far, the going has been easier than I have expected. All the levels (that I and my fellow expedition members have visited so far) belong to the turf ruled by Haloom Ghoude, the leader of the Ghoude Corporation. Those mysterious men in black suits (quite possibly the agents belonging to the Tetrarch, whatever that is) cannot run wild in the turf, thanks to the guard dogs that the Ghoude Corporation dispatches to the floors. Even though some of the floors do not house too many of those canines, they pretty much take care of the intruders from other turfs. (I think my body and the clothes have sucked in the scent of the fumes on the farm floor, and the dogs seem to recognize me as a member of the turf. Besides, the dog whistle that my master gave me is working as an insurance option.)

Mary Teana Blockheart, also known as the Pluck Princess, is planning to perform her music in the ritual, scheduled to be conducted on one of the upper floors of Towerld. Obviously, no one wants her to travel that far alone. I (known as Hector_1304), Wendietrea Nevaryt-terp (the postal princess), and Gideon Yendrey Drahctrex (the forger) team up to form the guard squad to protect the Pluck Princess on her journey to the ritual site.

All the members of the expedition team wear the mailperson’s uniforms of the same design. The post office belongs to the Ghoude Corporation, and the procurement of the uniforms is too easy. Even though not all of us are licensed mailpersons, the uniformity of the outfit brings the sense of unity to the team. Besides, the uniform design is functionally superior to the visually sensual sari that the Pluck Princess is accustomed to wearing. (She can save the gorgeous get-up for the main event of her performance.) The mailperson’s outfit makes us look more like the expedition members than performers of a traveling band.

Mary Teana carries her musical instruments (a lute and flutes). She puts her clothes in her roller bag and drags it. She is traveling light. Both Gideon and I carry roller bags, each of which is heavier than the carrier’s weight. Basically, the floors inside Towerld are flat, and we do not get exhausted all that much. The male members of the expedition have to carry the relatively heavy load, so it is still not too easy, though.

Wendy, my postal master, is more of a speedster than a powerhouse. She utilizes her maneuverability and nimbleness to play the role of the vanguard. She runs way ahead of the main party, and discovers the potentially dangerous elements that might get on the way of the expedition. (She is such a sucker for running, and she just wants to have fun by running constantly.)

The Pluck Princess plays a strange-looking instrument on a constant basis. It consists of pipes of different lengths and colors tied in a row, parallel to each other. (It reminds me of panpipes or pan flutes.) This journey would have been even more festive, if I could hear the tunes performed by Mary Teana. I just cannot hear the sound quite occasionally, as if the panpipes are just a collection of dog whistles (inaudible to humans). She claims that she has to keep on practicing playing instruments on a constant basis, and she wants to touch the instruments even when she is walking. (It is not easy for the likes of me to understand the mindsets of musicians.)

Just because the going has been relatively easy does not mean that the expedition is free of obstacles. If the beginning phase of the long journey can be this potentially troublesome, then I cannot imagine how much tougher it may get in the later phases of the journey (if I get to survive that long, that is).

    ---02---

The agents in black suits are about to attack the party very soon. We have to remind ourselves that we are not totally immune.

Wendy has just come back from her vanguard mission, and she is reporting the latest status of the situations surrounding the expedition team. Her status report is always accurate, and her ability to survey the surrounding environment (especially the front side) allows the expedition team to stay ahead of the game. I do appreciate her ability. I admit that she is just very good at what she does. However, she seems to forget occasionally that I am the chief of the guard squad. She should learn to talk to her leader properly.

I utter, Perhaps, you should learn to remind your mouth how to commune with me.

I do not mean to sound stingy, but I am beginning to sound like a bitter, old man being jealous of all the things that young girls are capable of doing so easily.

What is up with that? she sasses. Do you dare to treat me as if I am a rancid rat?

I cannot take her words with a grain of salt. I am overreacting to her reaction.
