Chapter 1
So, magic is real?
Steve, we’ve been through this. I know the last case was a lot for you. There’s a lot going on that you don’t know.
You know about it. How long have you known?
That’s not important. What is important is we’re pulling up to a crime scene. I need your head in the game.
The call sounded like a simple open and shut case. I’m sure I can focus on more than one thing at a time.
I gave Steve a knowing look. This is why I tried to keep my magic from him for so long. We didn’t have time for this. There was a dead body to be found.
The crime scene was at a local performing arts center. Apparently, something had gone awry with one of the actors. The uniformed officers that called us and were unsure if it was really murder or if it was some kind of tragic accident. They sounded shaken on the phone.
I parked the car at the curb and went into the theater. Empty theaters always felt like sacred places to me. With all the chairs lined up in a row and the angled row, it reminded me of a cathedral. As if the scene wasn’t already dramatic enough, the deceased party lay in the spotlight in the center of the stage. I didn’t have much experience with actors, but I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like this.
The uniforms were off to the side speaking to a weeping woman. She looked like she was about to swoon. Not faint, but swoon. It seemed best to leave the officers to their work.
The body was covered up. So far everything looked normal enough. Steve pulled back the sheet over the body before I could get to it. He gasped and jumped back. Startling a lead detective was never a good sign. I got closer and pulled back the sheet that had fallen back into place. Our victim was a woman. Her body was covered in burns. They had to be at least third degree. Somehow, her neck and face were perfectly pristine. It was as if someone had put a mannequin head on a corpse. A shiver ran up my spine.
Talk about a blaze of glory,
Steve muttered under his breath.
Was that a joke?
I didn’t mean to say that out loud. I’m so sorry. It’s just that this is so strange. There’s no way this was an accident. What could cause this?
