Chapter One

Sloan was tired of riding. She had been on her horse for a day and a half. After the last outlaw had been turned in, business had been slow. Jumping Jim Mitchell had been a small-time criminal with a lower bounty than she usually took on. The little podunk town that she dropped him in didn't have any action. They didn't even have a decent brothel. Sloan packed her saddlebags, hopped on Whiskey, and got out of town the first chance she got.

Bounty hunting in the West wasn't the easiest gig. It was good money if you could get it. Most of these small towns had no contact with the outside world until a rider came to town. There was no telling where an outlaw would end up.

Sloan had a simple game plan when it came to finding criminals. She ripped down wanted posters at every town she passed through. The lawmen didn't like it, but it cut down on her competition. Every night before she went to sleep she would study the pages, trying to memorize their faces. So far, it had worked out well.

She didn't like dealing with people, so this was the ideal job. Most of her time was spent on the back of her horse, Whiskey. Whiskey was the last remnant that she had of her normal life. She had raised her from a foal. When her father had realized that she wasn't going to settle down with any of the tow-headed farmer boys in town, he turned his back on her. Sloan packed up and rode out that same night.
