Alexi (Book 1) - Zoey Parker

    Chapter One

    Alexi

W here is your brother ?

I turned to my father. He was sitting in his favorite leather armchair, polishing his gun. I don’t know, I replied. I am not his keeper.

Grigory’s eyes narrowed as he deigned to glance my way. You are whatever I say you are, he said in a low voice that told me not to cross him. Go and find him. Vasily is impetuous ... and things are done differently in this country.

I nodded once and left Grigory to his guns. I walked outside and tried calling Vasily, but he didn’t pick up. Cursing under my breath, I got on my motorcycle and started riding. Vasily had only been in America three weeks, and already he had become hard to curb. He had made the bars and pubs in town his second home. Twice this week, Vlad and Anatoly had been forced to carry him back home. He had been so piss drunk he couldn’t even walk in a straight line.

It was past midnight, but I knew where he would be. Of all the bars in the area, Vasily liked Lou’s the best. It was a small bar at the edge of Colton Street. They had good beer, a big pool table, and pretty waitresses. I saw the boys’ bikes when I parked outside Lou’s and I walked in to find them in their usual corner, but I couldn’t see Vasily.

Where the fuck is my brother? I demanded.

Anatoly looked at me with bloodshot eyes. Ah, Alexi ... you decided to join us.

    You’re drunk.

    You’re never drunk enough.

I pushed him back into his seat and looked around. Where is he?

Calm down, Vlad told me. He went to take a piss. Now sit down, brother, and drink with us.

I gritted my teeth but sat down with them. My eyes turned instinctively towards the bar. I couldn’t see her there, but I knew she would be around. She was always around ... the beautiful doe-eyed siren with the red hair.

Vasily likes her too, Anatoly said, putting his arm around me.

I shrugged him off. Lean away from me, I said with irritation. You stink.

The redhead, right? Anatoly asked, refusing to let it go. You brothers have the same taste in women.

I’m going to get myself a drink, I said, walking towards the bar.

The girl behind the counter was shorter and smaller, with dark eyes and fair hair. She gave me an appreciative smile as I approached.

    What can I get you?

    Beer.

    What kind?

I don’t care, I replied. The strongest beer you have will do.

She nodded and pulled out a bottle from a fridge behind her. I sat at the bar instead of returning to the table. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with those idiots today. I spent too much time with them already.

Is there anything else I can get you? the fair-haired bartender asked.

Yes, there was. I wanted to ask where Cherry was. She always tended bar at night. But I kept my question to myself. I didn’t even want to admit that I knew her name.

    No, I said gruffly.

She eyed me for a moment and I saw the smile dip from her face. I don’t know why women expected me to be friendly ... what about me gave them that vibe?

Brother! You decided to join us!

Vasily’s arm came down around my shoulders and he leaned into me in an awkward bump that could be mistaken for a hug. He was obviously very drunk, so I helped him onto the stool next to me.

I had other plans tonight, he said. But Grigory wants me to be your watchdog.

    I don’t need watching.

Apparently that’s not true, I said, glaring at him. This is the fourth night in a row you’ve gone out drinking and whoring.

Whoring? Vasily asked, looking around. Have the whores come round yet ... I have not seen them?

    Prekrati eko, I hissed.

English, Vasily said. My annoyance only seemed to amuse him. We are in America now ... we speak English.

I rolled my eyes at him. Father wants to give you more responsibility, I said. I think he’s worried that—

I won’t be able to handle it? Vasily asked casually. Well, maybe he’s right to worry.

I glared at him. This is your birthright.

Vasily sighed and banged his fist against the counter. The blonde bartender who had served me glanced back at us nervously.

Birthright, Vasily spat. This is the land of the free ... I get to choose.

Not in this family, you don’t, I said firmly.

Bah! We were born in the wrong order, Vasily said, looking suddenly forlorn. You should have been the firstborn son.

But I wasn’t, I said sharply. And no matter what I do ... I will never be you.

Our father knows your worth, Vasily said. He’s just not one to praise.

I don’t want his fucking praise, I said, taking a large gulp of my beer. I don’t want it and I don’t need it.

Vasily said nothing. He just looked at me with a sheepish grin on his face and all I wanted to do was punch the smile right off it.

I have to settle some things for tomorrow, I said, rising from the barstool.

The night is still young, brother, Vasily said. Stay a while longer and drink with us.

I have work to do, I said. So do you.

Vasily smiled again. I knew that look on his face. I would not be able to prevent him from staying. Suit yourself, I said, under my breath. Then I motioned to the blonde bartender who had replaced Cherry for the night.

You can put it on my tab, I said, pointing to the empty beer bottle in front of me.

She walked over slowly, a nervous expression on her face. Uh ... I’m sorry, but you’ll need to settle your tab, she said. The bar is ... closing all tabs.

Lou never had a problem with it before, I said. We have an understanding.

I’m aware, she nodded. It’s just that ... Lou had a stroke recently and ... well, his medical bills have been expensive ... Cherry’s doing the best she can. But it’s hard for her to work and look after Lou.

She didn’t seem to want to tell me anymore, and I didn’t ask. Fine, I said, pulling out my wallet and paying my share.

Um ... what about them? she asked, eyeing the boys behind me. They all have tabs that need to be closed.

You’ll have to take it up with them, I said uncaringly. Then I turned to Vasily. "You can’t keep fucking around like this. You’re here
