Chapter One

Talia

The enforcers regularly hosted high-stakes poker games in the warehouse. Anyone was welcome to join them, so long as they weren’t a police officer. And even then, a few officers had been known to frequent the games. Really, the only rule was that you had to be able to buy your way in and you couldn’t snitch.

So, when a long-legged woman with dark red hair, a hat pulled low over her eyes, and a wad of cash stashed between her breasts walked through the door, the guard didn’t hesitate. He let me right inside.

I’d had one job before. I was desperate to get away from my dad, even if that meant serving limp fish and chips at a dive bar near the docks. Having my own money was simply a bonus.

My boss was a massive man, part brick wall, who stared too long at my ass and always had a small dab of tartar sauce on the edge of his lip. But despite me only being sixteen, he let me serve beer to the dockworkers who came in for an afternoon drink, which I appreciated. The tips were great, and I could handle the comments from the men as long as it meant I had a bit of freedom.

But as soon as my dad finally asked where I’d been spending all of my time and deigned to step foot in the place, he pulled the plug on the whole situation. My boss may have been a big man, but even he wasn’t prepared to stand up to Piero Esposito.

I’m sorry, sir. My boss had cowed, practically doubling over in a bow as if my dad was a king rather than the Don of the Esposito mafia family. I didn’t realize Talia was your daughter.

My dad pressed a finger into his thick chest, the rest of his fingers curled back as though he were holding a gun, and then he pulled the imaginary trigger. It was a warning.

Well, now you know.

After that, few people were willing to hire me for obvious reasons, and I was back on Daddy’s payroll. He gave me a generous monthly allowance and insisted no daughter of his would work. He had dreams of me marrying within the organization, but only once he deemed me ready.

I tried to explain on multiple occasions how I was living in a kind of slavery. How keeping me at home would eventually cause a rebellion that even he wouldn’t be able to control, but Daddy only laughed and pinched my cheek.

You have always been so spirited, Talia. You’ll have to control that when it comes time to marry.

I never had managed to lose that pesky spirit, but I had learned to keep it hidden. Sneaking around behind Daddy’s back was a lot easier when he trusted me to stay in line.
