    Chapter 1

    Alexi

W hat the fuck is this ? Anatoly demanded. This is fucking grunt work.

I smiled. This is my father’s ingenious way of putting me back in my place, I said as I scraped the layer of concealed oil and other assorted food particles from various surfaces in the kitchen.

We usually had someone come in to do this shit ... but Grigory liked to get creative with punishments he disguised as ‘necessary chores.’ Of course, the fact that it was a menial task made it all the more insulting, but I decided it was a small price to pay for disobeying him. I had half expected him to clock me and kick me out of the house. This was far better than I had expected.

Okay, I get putting you back in your place, Anatoly complained. But why me? I didn’t do shit.

I shrugged. Just shut the fuck up and scrape.

These men are fucking animals, Anatoly complained. They can’t get the food from their plates to their damn mouths?

I laughed because Anatoly was the one who couldn’t eat a damn meal without spilling something. The truth was that Grigory hadn’t exactly told Anatoly to help me. I had made up that little piece of information, not that I would admit as much to him of course.

I heard a beep on my phone alerting me to a new message. It suddenly hit me that Cherry didn’t have my number. What if something happened and she needed me? Of what if she went into labor and she needed a ride to the hospital? I hadn’t exactly told her to call me either. To this day, I hadn’t even told her that I wanted to be there for the baby.

I stopped short, realizing the truth of it. I did want to be part of the baby’s life. The realization had snuck up on me and now that it hit, the weight of it floored me. Who would’ve thought having a child was the one thing I didn’t know I wanted? Of course, Vasily had been right about that. We had been living under Grigory’s control for so long as to allow ourselves to only want what he wanted for us.

Hey, man ... you’ve got a couple of messages from Pasha.

I frowned. He disappeared a few hours ago ... I said, getting to my feet and picking up my phone.

I opened up our chat and scrolled through Pasha’s messages.

"Alexi ... fuck, man ... we’re at Lou’s ... can’t say much ... here for Cherry ... Grigory is here."

I felt anger course through me. So tonight hadn’t been about punishment at all. Grigory had just wanted to get me out of the way so that he could head to Lou’s and take care of Cherry. I glanced at the time. It was well past one, which meant that the bar would be empty of anyone else ... expect my father and his men.

Fuck him, I growled as I darted towards the staircase.

Alexi? Anatoly yelped after me, but I didn’t stay to explain.

I raced upstairs first and grabbed my gun, then I rushed back downstairs and outside to my bike. I was on my bike, revving up the engine, when Anatoly raced out after me.

What the hell happened? he asked. Where are you going?

Lou’s, I said. Grigory has taken the boys there to deal with Cherry.

Anatoly’s eyes went wide. Alexi, man ... don’t you think you should stay out of it. I mean—

She’s carrying my baby, Anatoly, I snapped.

That shut him up real fast. He opened his mouth and closed it like a goldfish. I didn’t wait to be asked more questions. I zoomed away from the house, in the direction of Lou’s. The whole time, my heart kept pumping chaotically against my chest. It felt like I was going to explode at any second now, but I needed to keep cool ... I needed to get to Cherry on time. If he had hurt a hair on her head ... I didn’t know what I’d do, but I knew it wouldn’t be pretty.

Their bikes were nowhere in sight when I stopped outside the bar. Of course, they wouldn’t be. I rushed towards the doors, but I couldn’t see much. I shoved through the doors, thinking they would be locked, but apparently not. They slammed open and a few heads, including Pasha’s, turned to me, but Grigory and Cherry were staring at each other with such intensity that they barely seemed to notice my entrance.

Get your fucking hands off her, I snarled.

Grigory turned his head towards me at the same time that Cherry did. I saw her wide eyes flood with relief and I glanced towards her belly. She was wearing an oversized sweater that hid her stomach and I wondered if she had already begged for the baby’s life. Did Grigory already know she was pregnant and did he just not care?

Grigory looked furious too, but his anger was contained. Alexi ... I gave you orders tonight.

I decided not to follow them, I said, trying to remain calm. Then I remembered that Pasha had been the one to tip me off, and if Grigory knew, Pasha would be in a world of pain. He didn’t have the luxury of being the boss’ son, and that meant Grigory would be ruthless. I knew you were trying to keep me busy ... and I was right. Now let go of her.

You do not give the answers around here, boy. I do ... now either get the fuck out of here, or help me do the job you should have done in the first place.

I felt my hand shake. Was I really going to do this? Was I really going to challenge my father like this? I had never done it before. We had never been on opposites sides of anything. If I started this now, I would not be able to stop it. I had never pushed Grigory this far, and I had no idea how he would react. He would either back down, or one of us would end up dead. I knew that if I was the one who lost this standoff then Cherry’s life and my baby’s would be forfeit too. Which meant one thing ... I could not lose this.

I pulled out my gun and aimed it directly at my father’s head.

Or how about you do what I say for once ... or I blow your fucking brains out right here, right now?

I saw Grigory’s eyes narrow and focus in on me. He was trying to figure out if I was serious or if I was just threatening. To be honest, I didn’t quite know myself. I suppose when it came down to the wire, we would find out.

You would do that? Grigory asked. You would kill your own father?

Cherry gasped, and I realized she had just figured out our connection to one another ... I was guessing this was not the kind of family she wanted to be a part of. I couldn’t blame her ... I was starting to question if this was the family I wanted to be a part of. And I had known nothing else my entire life.

Yes, I would, I said, letting confidence color my tone. Walker ... get your hands off her or I will shoot you first.

All this for a woman? Grigory asked, looking at me in disbelief.

She’s having my baby, I blurted out.

Grigory frowned, and then he turned to Cherry as though to examine her. She doesn’t look pregnant.

    It’s early on, I said.

Grigory turned his gaze towards me. How do you even know it’s yours?

Fuck you, you asshole, Cherry burst.

Grigory decided to be charmed by her insult. "She’s
