CHAPTER 1
THE DEFINITION OF CAN’T
The word ‘can’t’ makes strong people weak, blinds people who can see, saddens happy people, turns brave people into cowards, robs a genius of their brilliance, causes rich people to think poorly, and limits the achievements of that great person living inside us all.
-Robert Kiyosaki
What does the word can’t mean to you?
The definition of can't is:
The negative of can; an auxiliary verb expressing incapacity, inability, withholding permission, etc.; can not
.
With that definition in mind, as yourself: Are you withholding permission from your own success?
The definition withholding permission
stands out for me because often we can't complete or fulfill something in our lives without permission. Often we want look for permission from external sources to define our dreams and goals for our lives instead of looking within. Our first training for our permission came when we were young. Our parents, siblings, teachers and environment showed us our limits. Some of us were raised with strict and limiting environments while others were raised in open and free environments. Most people were raised somewhere in the middle of those two extremes. However you were raised, you were given some limitations on your life.
Every limitation is not bad. Some restrictions were meant to protect and provide safety for us. If our parents never told us that the stove was hot, we would have to discover a potentially dangerous situation without their guidance.
However when limits restrict permission from allowing our personal character, traits and gifts to manifest, we need to re-examine them.
Our parents may have a fear of being in large crowds and decide to keep us in the house or avoid large events. Perhaps our parents have experienced real losses and failures. As a result, they make decisions that keep us from going down the same path.
In essence, our parents can be our first introduction to our belief in the word can’t
.
When you think of the word can’t you automatically get a negative vibe from the words. The word prepares your mind for the remaining parts of the sentence that will most likely be bad news. Your ensuing reaction to the word is inevitably the opposite of what would bring you joy.
Imagine you are a child and you walk into the kitchen. You see a huge plate full of cookies calling your name! You feel the urge to satisfy your desires with no restrictions. Then you hear:
Sarah you CAN’T have those cookies before dinner. They will ruin your appetite!
Now your joy has turned to sorrow. Those cookies were once a symbol of joy and happiness. After your strict limits set by your mom, those cookies now have cant
written all over them. Now those cookies represent a moment where you can’t fulfill your desires.
I gave you a very simple example of how our life experiences can shape our view of our potential and steal our joy.
The power in the word can’t
is life altering.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates
