Y ou okay with slumming it tonight? I asked George as we walked into the bar.

Those words came out a little too loud as we discovered our usual neighborhood dive bar was not only quiet, but nearly empty too. That was an unusual sight on a Friday night.

I’m not slumming just because I got a big promotion at work, George replied. The money isn’t going to change me.

I had been trying to get under George’s skin all week, ever since he called to tell me about his promotion on Monday. The work was going to be killer, but so too was the paycheck. His daily salary was now close to what I made in a month. It was obscene.
