Chapter 1 – What is Mindfulness?
Have you ever walked into a room and looked around in confusion, wondering why you were in there? Have you ever driven your car and arrived at your destination without remembering how you got there? Or when you checked your watch, did you have to look at it again because you forgot the time? What about if you were asked to share how you spent the first hour of your day? Would you be able to remember it in detail? If not, you are not alone. All of us have been in those very situations more often than we would probably like to admit.
If you, like so many of us, find that you can’t remember parts of your day, it doesn’t necessarily signal a memory problem. It may just mean that you aren’t truly present in your head. Presence is the key to achieving mindfulness.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is when our mind is completely focused on the present moment and attentive to what is happening in it. According to mindful.org, Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Being mindful is something we are born having the ability to do, but it is not as easy to achieve as one might think.
Focusing our mind for any extended period of time is not something that comes easily and naturally to most of us. Our mind wanders more often than we might even be aware. The majority of the time, our mind drifts into places of negative thoughts which can cause us to feel stress, anxiety, regret, shame, and unhappiness. Did you know that eighty percent of the average person’s daily thoughts are negative?[i] We may not understand that we are even having these negative thoughts as they form an unconscious mental chatter that can leave us with a feeling that life is hard, and the struggles that we have to go through aren’t worth it.
I experienced this in my own life when my wife was in the hospital with a very serious health condition. I spent countless hours in her hospital room. Every time one of the medical machines that she was hooked up to would make any kind of noise, my mind would instantly shift my focus, and I would find myself feeling a sense of panic and always assuming the worst. It was enough to drive me crazy.
On top of that, every time a doctor or nurse would enter the room, they would always start to share information with me. My mind could absorb the first few things they said, but then I would find myself sort of tuning out, not because I didn’t want to hear and learn from everything they had to say, but just the opposite; I wanted so badly to understand everything that I found myself feeling completely overwhelmed by it all. It got so I would have to write down key medical terms they would say and then look them up on my phone after they left the room. Then I could sit in the room when it was quiet and focus on coming up with all of the questions I wanted to ask the nurse or doctor. I
