Connor Whiteley
Hello, I'm Connor Whiteley, I am an 18-year-old who loves to write creatively, and I wrote my Brownsea trilogy when I was 14 years old after I went to Brownsea Island on a scout camp. At the camp, I started to think about how all the broken tiles and pottery got there and somehow a trilogy got created. Moreover, I love writing fantasy and sci-fi novels because you’re only limited by your imagination. In addition, I'm was an Explorer Scout and I love camping, sailing and other outdoor activities as well as cooking.Furthermore, I do quite a bit of charity work as well. For example: in early 2018 I was a part of a youth panel which was involved in creating a report with research to try and get government funding for organised youth groups and through this panel. I was invited to Prince Charles’ 70th birthday party and how some of us got in the royal photograph. Finally, I am going to university and I hope to get my doctorate in clinical psychology in a few years.

Human Branding for Authors - Connor Whiteley
CHAPTER 1: SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY AND OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
IN THIS CHAPTER, I’M going to be briefly telling you about the social psychology of affiliation and the social need to connect, and I’ll mention some other important factors to know about for the rest of this book.
Social Psychology:
Below is an extract is taken from my Psychology of Human Relationship 2nd Edition book that discusses the importance of affiliation.
"Human relationships are very important to humans because human relationships but especially close relationships; such as sexual relationships or relationships with close friends; are the centre of human existence.
We cannot thrive without them.
I know from personal experience that I prefer to have close relationships and the relationships I have had have been very important in my life and as humans, we have a fundamental need to affiliate (Baurester and Leary, 1995)
In other words, humans are a social species, so we need to be with others and humans are constantly thinking about affiliation, relationships and being with others."
The takeaway message from the extract is that your readers want to affiliate and form a friendship with you, so the point of human branding is to let them connect and affiliate with you.
Recommended reading: if you’re interested in more about the psychology of human relationships or social psychology. Then I would recommend checking out my psychology books at:

Other information:
Now that we've looked at the social psychology behind human relationships and connection.
We can have a look at some basic marketing principles that don't just apply to human branding but book marketing as well.
Marketing Rebellion:
After reading the amazing book Marketing Rebellion by Mark Schaefer; you can find the link in the back of the book; I learnt some very important human truths that I feel like you should be aware of before you continue reading:
Humans want connection and to be loved.
Brands; like your author brand; are people that people can connect with.
People form attachments to brands.
Tips from Marketing Week:
During the research process of this book, I came across a very good website that gave me two important facts that highlight the importance of building a human brand.
Consumers who perceive your brand as human are 2.1 times more likely to love the brand
Consumers who perceive your brand as human are 1.6 times more likely to purchase from it and 1.8 times more likely to recommend it
Source:
www.marketingweek.com/how-human-is-your-brand/
Therefore, I think that these facts clearly show the benefits of making your author brand more human.
Other need to know factors:
Know, like, trust:
I have briefly mentioned this in the previous chapter but you need to know this concept as it is a fundamental of marketing. This is because people are drawn to people meaning we do business with people we know, people we like and people we trust.
And this links back to The Creative Penn example in the introduction.
Methods for using the know, like and trust principal will be the basis of this book and it will be shown throughout.
The compound effect and this is a component:
Firstly, I would definitely recommend the book The Compound Effect by Perseus.
The compound effect feeds very well into the ‘this is a component’ idea meaning that all human branding and other marketing activities will add up over time to deliver you results.
For example, by doing podcasting, Twitter and other things that we will explore throughout this book. Over time all these activities will add up.
However, that statement that you were meant to be doing more than just human Branding is not meant to scare you because you can learn and develop the skills over time as I have. It has taken me over the best part of a year to do what I'm doing now.
For more information on book marketing, I highly recommend How to Market A Book by Joanna Penn.
Although the message to take away it's if you do a bit of all these methods each day over time you will start to see that it can take weeks months or even years, you will receive results.
PART ONE: VOICE
CHAPTER 2: INTRODUCTION TO VOICE
THE HUMAN VOICE IS a powerful thing
It has the power to connect us with people that we never would have met before especially in this time over the internet and with the opportunities that both traditionally published and independently published authors have access to.
That will be the focus of this first part and we will look at the power of the human voice to make your brand more human.
However, in this short introduction to voice, I will give you a very quick introduction to why voice is so powerful.
One more aspect of the human voice that makes it useful for human branding is that it’s a very distinct and unique thing. As no two voices are the same and this is the same for faces- yet faces will be discussed in another chapter.
It is the voice’s unique characteristics that can make the human voice a very attractive thing for people to listen to.
For example, many American readers love the British accent. Personally, as a British person, I cannot understand why.
Joking aside- a very quick example of how this can be a very powerful thing is that the Creative Penn podcast causes tens of thousands of visitors to come back each week to listen to her podcast and it's through her podcast that she gets a lot of indirect marketing and considering this is one of her main marketing methods that has allowed her to get a six-figure business. I think that this shows is there potential proof that voice is a powerful thing.
As through her podcast, people learn to know her, like her and trust her so they can potentially go onto buying her products and buy other products through her affiliate links.
On the other hand, another reason why voice is a powerful thing is that voice and speech has the power to unite us and destroy us. Personally, I think that the human voice can potentially be more powerful than a bullet or weapon because a few words that can cause an uprising.
I know that it was an extreme example yet I think it shows my point.
Finally, the human voice can be a great vehicle for delivering the fundamental principle of human branding and this is the know, like, trust principle. This states that we do business with and buy from people we know, like and trust.
In addition, is that principle is the core of human branding and this book as everything we’re going to be talking about and discussing will be centred around this one idea, and voice is a very powerful thing in order to deliver this know, like and trust concept.
As a result of people will hear your voice and listen to you. They feel like they know you, then as they listen to you more, they will probably like you and over time they will learn to trust you. Making them a lot more likely to buy your books and other products.
Please read on as in part 1 of this book we look at voice and how to make your brand more human using the very simple thing of your voice.
CHAPTER 3: PODCASTING
I TRULY LOVE PODCASTING because it's a brilliant way to connect with readers as well as it is a great marketing tool.
Therefore, the focus of this chapter will be teaching you about what is a podcast and how to use it for your marketing as well as how to use it to become more human.
What is a podcast?
Personally, I define a podcast as a series of audio episodes that talk about a specific topic or a series of episodes that are united by something. Such as a topic or theme or niche.
For example, my favourite podcast The Creative Penn podcast is a series of audio episodes about creative entrepreneurial, book marketing and more.
In addition, another of my favourite podcast is the Kobo writing life podcast that focuses on Kobo, writing and other general writing things.
How I personally use podcasting to make myself a more human brand?
As I consider Joanna Penn as a creative mentor to me. My podcast is a similar structure to hers as I release a new episode of The Psychology World Podcast every Monday.
In addition, every week on my podcast I talk about a new psychological topic that I introduce to the listener before I talk about one or two case studies that are evidence for the topic as well as I do a critical thinking section on the studies. Basically, I say what’s good and what’s bad about them.
For example, the Monday before I dictated this chapter. I did a podcast episode on the cognitive explanations for the formation of human relationships.
In other words, how our mental processes; like thinking; cause our friendships and romantic relationships to form.
Finally, in order to make yourself more human by using podcasting, you can use a very important yet very simple feature in your podcast.
This feature is simply by doing a personal update section.
Personal updates section don’t have to be long sections that go into the ins and outs of your life. As instead, you can merely talk about what’s happening in your author career as well as other writing-related things, if you want.
Personally, I know that this works because as I've been listening to The Creative Penn podcast for the best
