Connor Whiteley

Hello, I'm Connor Whiteley, I am an 18-year-old who loves to write creatively, and I wrote my Brownsea trilogy when I was 14 years old after I went to Brownsea Island on a scout camp. At the camp, I started to think about how all the broken tiles and pottery got there and somehow a trilogy got created. Moreover, I love writing fantasy and sci-fi novels because you’re only limited by your imagination. In addition, I'm was an Explorer Scout and I love camping, sailing and other outdoor activities as well as cooking.Furthermore, I do quite a bit of charity work as well. For example: in early 2018 I was a part of a youth panel which was involved in creating a report with research to try and get government funding for organised youth groups and through this panel. I was invited to Prince Charles’ 70th birthday party and how some of us got in the royal photograph. Finally, I am going to university and I hope to get my doctorate in clinical psychology in a few years.

Book Marketing For Writers - Connor Whiteley

    INTRODUCTION

Learning how to be a writer takes a lot of time, practice and writing. There are a lot of tips and tricks to be a writer and that was one of the purposes of the Global Author.com.

This website was my author hub for a couple of years where each week I wrote fascinating, engaging and easy-to-understand blog posts (and podcast episodes for a long time) on different writing, marketing and publishing areas to help writers.

However, when my own writing and author business gone too busy, I decided to close down the website but I didn’t want authors and writers to lose this knowledge, so I’ve decided to repurpose those great blog posts into books like this one.

So in this book marketing book, this contains tons of great blog posts to help you improve your book marketing, from book metadata to author websites, book categories and so much more to help you sell more books at a basic and semi-professional level. If you don’t have these basics covered then you never hope to sell more books in the future.

I’m always learning from the top writers working today and have been around for decades, and I reference them constantly throughout the book, so you know that I’m sharing tips and tricks that aren’t some guru rubbish, but are done by the pros.

All I want from these books is to help you become a better storyteller, book marketers and publisher. I want to help you and that’s why I’m repurposing my blog posts like this.

    But who am I?

Personally, I am extremely careful about who I learnt writing tips off because there are so many gurus in the writing community. As well as people who have written only one book and they think they know everything.

No one knows everything, if you want to be a professional writer you always need to be learning.

Therefore, in case you’re careful like me, I’m Connor Whiteley, an author with over 200 short stories written, over 50 fiction books and counting and over 30 nonfiction books written. I’m also a podcaster, blog writer and university student.

I am a dedicated writer who is always learning and wanting to improve, and that energy, drive and determination comes through in this book. Especially towards the end.

Additionally, as some bonus content, at the very end of this book, I’m including some more blog posts about how to write better mysteries and science fiction books.

This is a brilliant must-read book marketing book for anyone who wants to take their writing seriously. And these chapters appear in the order they did on my website.

    Enjoy!

    WHY ARE BOOK TITLES IMPORTANT?

Book titles are one of the three most important selling points of your book, not including the plot and quality of the book itself. The other two factors are book covers and book descriptions.

Note: these three selling points work together to sell your book as well as they are all equally important.

The reason why book titles are important is because these need to grab the reader’s attention. Making them want to find out more.

    Book Titles: Online Example

Their importance can easily be seen on the online retailers. Such as: Kobo, Amazon and Apple Books. Because when you go to the stores there are well over two, three or even four million books on them. As well as a lot of categories have over 100,000 books in them.

Meaning that as your reader is scrolling through the endless number of books. It is the job of your book title and book cover to capture the reader’s attention. Before they click on another book and ultimately buy a book that isn’t yours.

    Book Titles: Bookstore Example

I had always known of the importance of a good title but it wasn’t until I went to university and visited the Waterstones in Canterbury, England that I realised how important it truly was.

The realisation hit me when I was walking around the bookstore looking at my favourite genres and not skipping up any books to look at.

The main problem in bookstores is that most books only have the spine showing with the title. Resulting in your book title being the most important feature of your book in that moment.

Following this, it was only when I got to the third floor when it hit me that the book title is why I wasn’t picking up any books.

What Makes a Good Book Title?

Therefore, after looking at their importance- how do you make a good book title?

Overall, the book title needs to do three main things:

    Capture the reader’s attention

    Be genre appropriate

    Say what the book’s about

Capture the Reader’s Attention and genre appropriateness:

To the capture the reader’s attention, your book title should be short as well as dramatic. Yet it needs to be genre appropriate as well.

For instance, if you had a romance book titled: The Beheading.

Then this is likely to turn a lot of romance readers away as title suggests dark themes with a lot of violence.

So, it might be better to title your book: One Last Shot at Love.

I don’t know. I’m not a romance author but the second title is still slightly better than the first title.

    Say What the Book’s About:

This is another job of the book title as the title sets the exceptions of the reader for what the book will be about.

Such as: my book Garro: Heresy is exactly what the title suggests heresy, conspiracy, betrayal and mass murder.

Equally, my Forensic Psychology book is about forensic psychology and crime related psychology. I don’t talk about sociology or other social sciences as this isn’t what the book is about and it would disappoint readers.

    Conclusion and Takeaways:

In conclusion, your book title needs to fulfil a number of functions and it should/needs to be the following:

    Captures the Reader’s attention

    Engaging

    Short, punchy

    Genre Appropriate

HOW TO BUILD A HUMAN BRAND WITH TAKING A STAND?

As you all know I love human branding, I love to help authors develop their own unique human brand that readers can connect with and learn to know, like and trust you, and one of these ways is to take a stand.

In short, taking a stand can help you to build a human brand because it repels people who aren't your audience, some of your audience won't care but an amount of your audience will
