    Chapter 1:

The date was not going well. Laura knew that things would never go anywhere with Ralph within 5 minutes of meeting him. Maybe it was within the first 5 seconds, but she had to at least give him the benefit of the doubt. If asked to explain why, she couldn’t give a solid answer beyond that there was just no chemistry.

However as she observed him and thought about why she never wanted to see him again, his self depreciating comments stood out as one answer. Just, little jokes he made at his own expense. He joked about how clumsy he was, and about how he barely knew how to use his smart phone.

    I’m basically a Luddite!

It was meant to be a joke, but it really just came across as sad.

Ralph was 26, the same age as Laura. Yet he apparently had about as much grasp of modern technology as a cataract ridden Boomer who outright refuses to pay their bills online, because they need to feel that paper statement in their hands, otherwise it does not exist!

Look, Ralph. This isn’t going to work out.

Oh. Well, I hope you find someone else whose worthy of your time.

Ugh! Come on! At least have a shred of dignity! Another self depreciating comment, but this one was combined with an utterly pathetic attempt to garner sympathy from her. Was he trying for pity sex? Laura got up and left the table. She was out of there.

There was no sleeping that night for her. Not even the Unisom had helped. Taking a Unisom before bed was usually a bulletproof method for combating her insomnia. Sometimes however, not even that worked. It was now 3 AM, and she dared not take a second one. Nights like these left her with plenty of time to think, to be alone with herself and her thoughts. Lying awake in bed, it occurred to her that she was angry, and she didn’t know why.

Part of her anger was because of Ralph. She knew that much. Ralph was a disappointment. He looked good, and on paper, or at least on his dating profile, he seemed like a good fit for her. Bachelor’s degree in economics, with a minor in gender studies. He worked as a budget analyst for a large company. He had to be more competent than he’d let on. It was his self denigration that really stuck
