This month’s story has a main character who isn’t particularly sympathetic, for reasons we’ll discuss in detail. In Only Orange we meet Jeanne, who is on holiday with her family and finding herself reacting badly to her brother’s girlfriend, Audrey. Jeanne’s troubled personality is central to the story, and we’re going to look at how the author holds our interest and makes us want to keep reading even though the narrator is someone who is quite uncomfortable to be with. Along the way, we’ll look at some other key features of the story including the themes of different people seeing things differently, and the nature of insiders and outsiders.
Let’s start with Jeanne and her issues with Audrey and others. One thing that might initially feel somewhat strange to the reader, is that Jeanne seems to resent Audrey
