Chapter 1
It was a miracle of medical science. Nanomachines, each one carrying a small payload of lab grown stem cells. Tissue regeneration and augmentation on a cellular level. It was both praised as a miracle breakthrough, and derided for the potential consequences.
Then the procedure for rebuilding heart tissue was perfected. The praise increased and the skeptics were momentarily quieted. Then work began on rebuilding damaged brain tissue. From there it progressed to becoming a treatment option for severe psychiatric disorders. Each progression in this area was met with controversy. Proponents of this brain rewiring, as it was sometimes referred to, hailed the technology as a miracle that not only saved lives but helped preserve the quality of life for people with degenerative neurological disorders. Many of these proponents were former psych patients and nursing home residents whose lives had indeed benefited from it. Opponents cited the people whose conditions were made worse by the procedure.
As the technology evolved, the procedures became easier, less risky, and cheaper. This soon opened the door to cosmetic surgery applications. It also opened the door to elective personality alterations. The controversy flared up again. One of the few things that both sides agreed on was that the genie had been let out of the bottle. It could be strictly regulated and it was, but it was here to stay.
Cassandra Ebner sat at her monitoring station, dutifully monitoring the patient's readouts. The sedation had taken full effect. All the vitals looked good. When Heather woke up she would be a different woman. How different she would be, they didn't fully know. As with all surgical procedures there was the risk that something would go wrong.
