Times were hard for Ellie. On her twenty-third birthday she'd found out that her long-term boyfriend was cheating on her with the neighbor. Then, as she was packing up her things to move out of the home they'd shared, she'd received notice that she had not made it into nursing school. And finally, when she collapsed onto the floor, crying, her no-good ex walked in and announced he would be keeping the cat.

In one day she had been completely unmoored from everything she had held dear. All the elements of her life that had held meaning were suddenly gone. She'd taken a few days to mourn this shocking turn of events, to wallow in grief. She'd screamed into pillows, put her ex's face on a dartboard, and called all her friends to vent. She'd even eaten three pints of ice cream while watching sappy Netflix romances in the new cheap apartment she had found.

Eventually, however, her naturally bubbly, positive personality began to win out over the sadness. When she thought about it, her ex had actually been a pretty terrible lover, so maybe it was time to move on anyway. And the cat had never liked her — it'd enjoyed tormenting her by knocking her favorite books off the shelves in the middle of the night. And as for nursing, she was only really doing that because she didn’t know what else to do. So maybe there was a blessing hidden in this disaster of a birthday. 

Now I can spend time finding out what my true passions are, she said to herself, as she was sitting on the couch eating Doritos and trying to make sense of her life. I could go back to school, or maybe take a trip to Bali to clear my mind!

Then she looked at her bank account. She didn't have Bali money — she barely had Poptart money. 

So, the need for cash suddenly became stronger than her new desire for self-discovery. Ellie knew she’d need to get a job soon, or she wouldn’t be able to afford any more Doritos (or electricity for that matter). So she began a desperate job search on the internet — for any job that would keep a roof over her head. It was rough going, however. Mostly she found money laundering scams, poorly disguised prostitution offers, and coffee house jobs. Being a fresh college graduate, Ellie had little job experience but really didn’t want to make coffee as her entry-level job. It all felt hopeless. What was she to do?

Forget my true passions, I just want to keep the lights on, she wailed to friends as she desperately searched for something worthwhile. Why is this happening?
