Selfie Of An Entrepreneur - Olubamike Fadipe
CHAPTER ONE
The Pre-Selfie Drama
Imagine yourself preparing for an event, needing to look good and also make a great impression, what do you do? Like most of us, you might want to take a deep breath to picture exactly how you need to look: what outfit would best suit the event - type of event, time of event; what categories of people are likely to grace the occasion? What is the occasion for and what is it about?
If you're like me, I could try on different outfits and keep checking each out in the mirror. On some occassions, I have taken snapshots of different looks and sent to friends who have more fashion sense than I believe I do - especially for classy, out-of-the-blues events. Once the dress or outfit is sorted, the next issue is other accompaniments (shoes, jewellery or accessories for ladies - colour, style, type).
Now, before I am accused of gender bias, a man's appearance is usually without any form of drama or fuss. They are in minimalist mode, no matter how great the occasion is. That explains why the menfolk succeed at doing more with less in a short time (apologies to my womenfolk as I am on the men's side for now). All that a man needs to achieve the best look, whether formal or informal, is a tie (for formal outings), belt, socks and wristwatch. In a few minutes he's ready!
The whole process of dressing up to the very fine details becomes easier when what to wear and all the items required have being assembled. The next stage then is the fit of the cloth; positioning of ties for the men and then the hair. Typically, it is no drama for the men as all they require is simple grooming. For the ladies, it starts with a lot of options which also poses a challenge of what to choose - weaves, wigs, curls, twists, corn-row or haircuts. Then the colour, tone, blend and the arrangement are all up for consideration.
The next level is the face beat with different tools, make-up brands and items to match and blend for the perfect finish. She crowns it all with a cologne or perfume. Having gone through the whole dressing up process, finishing and looking all ‘glammed' up, what next?
The next step by instinct for most people is to project themselves for others to see and appreciate. For the millenials, they stand in front of the mirror, check and confirm that the look meets the personal appeal and the impression requirement. Once these two filters have been achieved, the next is capturing the moment for storage.
Personal appeal is simply that satisfaction that comes from looking exactly how we like to look. On the other hand, the impression requirement is the perception that the total outlook will have to acquaintances, friends, onlookers and those we come in contact with. Have you ever dressed up to your nines according to your mirror and you step out feeling high and somewhere in the turn of events, you get a feedback about your shoes, the slit of your dress, your brows or caked powder with creases? It certainly deflates all the good feelings and changes the mood for the rest of the day.
These two filters are real and left to be judged by the mirror. The outcome is either a satisfactory sigh with a confident gait and a step to capture the look for keepsakes or to add more finishing touches where it matters.
