Introduction
Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.
-Rachel Zoe
Perception is reality. I’ve always loved that quote and it could not be truer. How others perceive you ultimately has a huge influence on how they interact with you, particularly in a professional environment. Your visual identity (how you dress) is one of the biggest ways to brand yourself, especially when it comes to your career. That is one of the reasons I have always loved fashion and styling. What you wear gives you the ability to introduce yourself without ever having to say a word. Visuals are a universal language that cross cultural and societal boundaries. Your clothing can be an extremely powerful tool to help elevate your career and confidence, if used in the right way.
If you want people to take you seriously, you first and foremost have to at least look like you take yourself seriously. Research shows that people form judgements about you within in the first 7 seconds of meeting you. Regardless of how intelligent you are or what type of person you are, people will form judgements about you solely based off of how you look. This is true in life and in business. Is it right? No. But it’s the truth. Particularly if you’re like me and work in an extremely competitive corporate environment. How you dress for the job matters. Regardless of what profession you are in, how you present yourself will have an impact on you in some way, shape, or form. Most people are too politically correct to tell you what everyone else is thinking and what everyone else has already learned. No one will let you know that wearing your club dress with a blazer is inappropriate and looks unprofessional. But they will all think it. Going into any work environment can be intimidating enough without having to worry about what to wear. Or worse, having to ask too many questions about what you should be wearing. When you walk into any professional setting I want you to have the tools you need to succeed.
With any job, and particularly in Corporate America, in order to be successful you have to know how to play the game. 50% of any job truly is learning to play the game. The other half is execution. I can say from years of professional experience in both New York City and Washington, D.C., that the quicker you learn the game, the sooner you’ll flourish. Learning, growing, and getting ahead in this type of environment for the past five years has taught me so much about the importance of optics. You’d be surprised how much of an impact simply showing up, looking the part, and being on top of your game can have on your career. But one thing I’ve noticed is how much harder it can be for women in the workplace, particularly when it comes to dressing the part.
The amount of scrutiny that women face in society today is ridiculous. Everything from hair, to weight, to makeup is put under a microscope and held to impossibly high standards. It’s insane and I wish I could say it stopped outside the office but it doesn’t. Optics matter. There are just as many infuriating assumptions made about women in the workplace. I think many
