The Basics
What is a Ketogenic Diet?
First, let’s talk about how the ketogenic diet works. A ketogenic diet is a diet in which one consumes foods with little or (better yet) no carbohydrates and a very high concentration of fat.
When you eat lots of carbohydrates, it causes your body to produce a lot of insulin and glucose. Glucose is what your body uses for energy. Since glucose is the easiest to metabolize and burn, glucose is chosen over the existing stored fat in your body when you are eating carbs. Furthermore, foods with excess carbohydrates that you are eating are converted into fat by the body instead of being burned. Insulin is the chemical that your body uses to process the glucose and convert it to energy.
Since carbohydrates produce glucose and insulin, which causes fat to be stored rather than burned, on a high-carb diet it can be incredibly difficult to lose weight, even if you eat very little fat (not to mention it’s less tasty and much more difficult to follow).
However, by lowering your intake of carbohydrates you produce far lesser amounts of insulin and glucose. This causes your body to go into ketosis. Ketosis is what happens when your body becomes used to lower intake of food, or in this case, to lower intake of carbohydrates. It causes your liver to begin producing ketones. Ketones are energy molecules much like glucose, except that they cause your body to run entirely off of stored fat instead of the carbohydrates that you
