Sugar Detox - Andrea J. Clark
Chapter 1
The Dangers of Sugar Addiction
Everyone loves sugar. Even if we know that sugar is bad for our health, we still can’t resist it.
The reason? It’s pretty simple. Sugar is addictive. If the word addiction
didn’t clue you, you need to think twice about it.
Addictions are something telling you what to do. They are something stripping away your free will, leaving you dependent on getting something to feel better about yourself and to feel better physically. That’s something only you should be in control of. Realizing that is the first step, and the second is realizing just how bad a sugar addiction is.
Research has shown refined sugar is just as harmful as any other drug, especially when consumed in a large amount. Studies in rats have shown that sugar activates the brain’s pleasure centers more than cocaine does. Sugar addiction is closely related to the sugar refining process. During the refining process, white sugar is stripped to nothing but its calories and its carbs. There are no longer fats, vitamins, proteins, minerals or enzymes present. This means that refined sugar is no longer a food, it’s simply a chemical that’s derived from plant sources.
There have been studies that show that your brain reacts to sugar in an extremely similar way, much like how it respond to morphine or opiates such as heroin. It provides a euphoric effect on both your mind and body, helping you to achieve this feeling just like you would with drugs, making it where you need to consume more sugar to create this same feeling when previous smaller amounts worked in the first place. Experiments have been done on both animals and humans to show that sugar being taken from your diet can cause withdrawal symptoms that are similar to the withdrawal symptoms that happen when someone clears their systems of narcotics.
Sugar can create a chemical dependency, and its removal can cause cravings, shaking, and anxiety to start with. If you have a digestive system that is healthy and natural, then it can eliminate about two to four teaspoons of sugar each day, but an average soda usually has twelve ounces or roughly ten and a half teaspoons of sugar. Most people now consume about twenty-six teaspoons of sugar every day, which is effectively twelve times more than your body can handle. According to the National Health Service, it’s recommended that 70 grams of sugar is consumed a day for men, and about 50 grams is consumed a day for women.
Telling if You Are Addicted
There are many people that are addicted to sugar and just haven’t realized it yet. Of course, when you look at the facts, it’s not hard to tell if you’re addicted or not. Here are some questions you should ask yourself:
Do you worry about cutting out foods you often eat when you think of cutting out sugar from your diet?
Do you often overeat?
Do you feel sluggish or tired after you’ve eaten, especially after you’ve overeaten?
Do you have issues stopping after one serving of certain foods such as ice cream or cookies?
Do you suffer from health problems resulting from your diets?
Do you have a problem making changes to your diet even though you know it’ll help you?
Do you often crave sugary foods?
Do you find it hard to see sugary foods without eating them?
Do you set up routines around sugar, such as coffee and donuts every morning?
Do you feel during the day that you need sugar at any time?
Do you often suffer from headaches or mood swings without sugar?
If you’ve answered yes to one or more of these, then you most likely have a sugar addiction that you need to address.
Chapter 2
A Little About Sugar & Your Body
Getting this far is something to congratulate yourself for. You’re willing to make a change, but you know that sugar is everywhere. It’s in your starch, it’s in your drinks, and it’s in your day-to-day food. Sugar is a temptation in one of its truest forms, but you need to realize that a little sugar is necessary for your body. It's just not the sugar that you've come to know and love. Getting this far means that you are aware that sugar is bad for you, but you probably don’t know how bad it can actually be. It is important to understand how sugar harms your body and why you need to fight sugar addiction before it ends up controlling you for
