About this ebook

Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women's Anger by Soraya Chemaly: Conversation Starters

Anger is a useful instrument if used consciously and intentionally. It is a signal for the injustice that happens and initiates change. If anger is controlled and belittled by culture and society, it will limit women's power, preventing them from becoming fully human. Author Soraya Chemaly advises women to hold on to their anger instead of letting it go. There are many things to be angry about. She also suggests that women work with other women to channel their rage in a productive manner. She says women have the power to change the world and their lives.
Rage Becomes Her is cited as a Best Book for 2018 by The Washington Post, NPR, Psychology Today, and Book Riot.

Anger, according to Chemaly, is a just act and it is a part of the solution to the problem. Anger is a useful instrument if used consciously and intentionally. It is a signal for the injustice that happens and initiates change. If anger is controlled and belittled by culture and society, it will limit women's power, preventing them from becoming fully human. The book gives a historical account of how women were taught how to hide their strong emotions. Chemaly encourages women to use their bodies to express their emotions. Not doing this causes illness in mind and in the body. She explains the biochemical changes in the body when emotions are prevented from coming out. She mentions autoimmune diseases and damaging antibodies that attack women in various areas of their lives are illuminated. Men are criticized for presuming that they know what is best for women. They convince women that they are not capable of being rational and therefore could not make intelligent decisions. The author cites the reality that women are blamed for the rape, violence, and assault that happen to them. When bad things happen, the discussion often focuses on men's reactions, not on the women's thoughts and feelings. The book starts with a story of how the author's mother hid her anger while she smashed her highly prized wedding dishes over her house's
