About the Author
Introduction
Why are you here, now, interested in reading a book about Rituals of Release?
We all have different triggers, different wake up calls. We look around, take stock of our lives, and realize we are not where we want to be.
So we decide to change. We make plans, set goals, and tell everyone that this year, this time, you really mean it. You are determined to turn your life around, be successful, be energetic, be happy.
Then days turn into weeks and months and you find yourself still trudging along the same old treadmill of mediocrity, of feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. What happened? Where did the motivation go? Why hasn’t anything actually changed?
There are lots of factors that contribute to stagnation, but one of the most significant is that we’re weighed down by everything that has come before. All the goals, habits, projects and possibilities that we’ve filled our lives with up until now get stuck so that there’s no room for us to move, let alone create a new future.
It’s like going out and buying this absolutely gorgeous new outfit, but once we’ve crammed it into our over-full closet, it gets all crumpled and squished, and half the time, we can’t even find it. Then we give up and grab that same old pair of sweats that don’t really fit and have a stain on the knee that we hope no one notices. Even though we really want to wear those awesome new duds, when push comes to shove, we know where the sweats are, and it’s easier just to put them on because that’s what we’re used to.
You know that there’s stuff in the closet that you never use, and if you took those items out, you’d have room for the clothes that you want to be walking around in. But how do you figure out what can go? And there is SO MUCH STUFF -- it can be kind of daunting just thinking about going through it all! Where do you even start?
Okay, maybe I’ve taken the analogy a bit further than necessary, but you get the idea: we need to clear out the clutter not just in the external, physical world, but from inside our heads as well.
So why is this book about rituals? Why can’t we just decide to stop focusing on certain things and move on?
To be honest, we can probably live perfectly normal, productive lives without ever thinking of what we’re doing in terms of ritual.
However, trying to just move on
without incorporating deliberate rituals to release what has been holding us back is not only less effective, but it misses an opportunity to deepen the richness of our experience. The world outside keeps telling us to take on more responsibilities, to be busier, to get more done. But all this focus on Doing can rob us of actually Living. We need to stop and reconnect with the deeper meaning
