    Chapter 1: What is the Mediterranean Diet?

    The Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy eating plan that features traditional recipes from Greece, Italy, and other countries in the Mediterranean region. It emphasizes consumption of plant-based food such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. It replaces butter with beneficial fats like olive oil and incorporates herbs and spices (to minimize use of salt) into its recipes. It isn’t exactly a diet, at least not the typical diet with a long list of restrictions, but is essentially a healthier way of eating and living.
