    It's all in the mind is so true, but why are we not taught more about the mind? Why do we have to learn the hard way, if we are lucky enough to learn at all? Not fair! I have peppered my book with BPOW, (borrowed packages of wisdom), plus a pinch or two of my own spice scattered between the sage quotes of the illustrious philosophers. (I can do that – it’s my book!)

    These monumental gems of thought serve as road signs to emotional wisdom and they are the road signs I used as I journeyed through my life.

    True realization lies dormant in most people. We're just not properly informed in this area.

    So just how ‘emotionally intelligent’ are you?

    The good news is that the focus is no longer on IQ. Attention has shifted to EQ, our emotional quotient. Where IQ is usually something we are born with, EQ can be learned. Cool!

    History has revealed that many people with great IQs have led miserable lives and considering their intelligence capacity, have been moderate to underachievers.

    A great EQ on the other hand, proves to be the secret to a joyous journey where achievement soars above expectation. Emotional Intelligence is the know-how to be in / live in an agreeable emotional state. Hence the enthusiastic endeavor to get hold of this esteemed quality.

    So how do we get a grip on our emotions and choose the ones that will fill us with peace and contentment?

    Let’s start by settling a fundamental issue.

    Which enters your mind first….is it a thought or an emotion?

    There is an existing controversy amongst those who know. Some contend that it’s undoubtedly thought first! You think about something and then the related emotion floods your mind. Instinct plays a role, plus the fact that specific events can hijack normal thinking processes, but it’s thought first.

    Nope, argue others…..its emotion first and then thought. Something arouses one of our five senses and blam! ..an emotion arrives on the scene and only then do our thoughts begin to ponder these feelings.

    The subject is debatable and pretty much new territory in the development of man. My feeling (emotion or thought?) is that they’re pretty closely knit together. While emotion can change your physical status and cause your heart to beat faster – thought is needed to decipher the event for you. Thought on the other hand, requires emotion to actually change your physical status and raise your blood pressure.

    Regardless of which of the two components enters the mind first – be it emotion piggy backing thought or vice versa – there is one factor we can all agree on.

    We may not be able to choose an emotion - but we certainly can choose a thought.

    So THOUGHT is the key.

    Understanding, categorizing and selecting our daily thoughts is the secret to growing emotionally. Being in control of and able to choose our thoughts, which in turn summon related emotions, makes our future pretty much putty in our hands.

    Armed with the ability to distinguish a thought and the corresponding emotion type and then dismiss or allow the mind visitor at our own discretion, gives us the ability to decide upon and map out a wonderful journey – a happy life!

    Consciously choosing thoughts and their interconnected emotions advocates the need for an accurate discernment of each and every thought.
