Achieve Your Goals - Dr. Michael Ericsson

Chapter 1 –  How to Realize Your Goals

Achieving your goals is not a simple walk in the park, where you can simply come and go. The journey towards your goal is a one-way road. You can only move forward, get back to the past once in a while and look at what is in front of you. Self-discipline plays a major role in every of these for without it, one can never have the guts to wake up at six o'clock in the morning to go to an 8-hour exhausting work. Following the rules in your office is also a sign of self-discipline which might cause your job if not satisfied.

There are lots of techniques by which you can achieve your goals, depending on your abilities, resources and undoubtedly, amount of self-control. Below are a few tips about how you can start reaching for that dream now:

    Set your objectives

Your objectives are short-term specific goals, which show you to attain the long-term ones. The objectives are sometimes called micro-quotas because goals are broken into components. Instead of just saying, I am going to buy an automobile after three months, you can point out, I will earn $20,000 in 3 months and buy a car. What is the difference? The former statement only tells you what the individual wants, but the second one specifies how he plans to buy the car. This is the main function of the objective, which is to create a definite direction towards your goals. When you have already recognized your objectives, you can already determine how to accomplish your goals. How do you plan to earn $20,000 in three months? First, you can cut costs by spending less on unnecessary things. And second, earn more by working to the best of your talents and get promoted.

    Reward yourself

When people are so busy working on their goals, they tend to forget to look after themselves. Aside from eating a well-balanced meal, working out regularly and getting enough rest, you can reward yourself with something special. It could be something you have been wanting to have or maybe it's something that can take your mind off your problems. Treat yourself to dinner or take a leisurely walk at the seashore. Watch the sun set or rise and watch the way the golden color of the sun spreads all over the sky. Consider that rewarding yourself keeps you from producing burnout.

    Be SMART

A goal is not simply any goal that you want to accomplish or happen in your life. It should be a goal that is catered by your abilities set within a given period of time. You have to be specific with what you should do. Do you want to go to Europe or Asia? Obviously, answers would determine the kind of work that you have to do. The cost of living in Europe will be a lot higher than Asia or South America, hence you might have to save more money just to achieve it. It also has to be measurable and time-bound. If you're a doctor who wants your patient treated, you can say that he's already retrieved if he does not have any fever any longer. Set a deadline for achieving your goal. The goal should be attainable and realistic. If you have been focusing on having a mansion and sports car, these dreams won't happen if you only have a hundred-dollar savings every month.

Chapter 2 – How to Develop Perfect Habits

Habits, whether good or bad, are difficult to break. They are a part of your system that they come automatically. One good example of this is your morning routine. Once you wake up and escape from your bed, you go to the bathroom, wash your face, brush your teeth and take a bath. After that, you dress up, eat your breakfast and go to school. When you miss doing something, you might feel like something is missing. That will cause a domino effect that will make you irritable and edgy.

Cultivating good habits is quite a challenge. You have to break some bad habits and integrate the new good ones into the picture. It does not happen right away, as well. It is part of self-discipline development. It would need time and determination.

But before you can proceed with creating a habit, you first need to know which one is good and which is bad. Why do you have to know the difference? Simple. A good habit fosters self-discipline. The bad habit won't. First off, a good habit is a healthy act. Eating the right amounts of fruits and vegetables per day is an excellent habit, while eating more oily foods and less fiber-rich foods is a terrible one. The same is true with managing your stress. Good stress management practices include getting enough sleep and spending your time wisely, while a bad stress management habit includes smoking or alcohol consumption to the point of toxicity. Simply put, bad habits can further aggravate your problem, while the good ones get you out of it.

How will you start a good habit and stick to it?

Take it one step at a time. Most people are unsuccessful sticking with good habits because they're trying to accomplish so a lot of things at the same time. For example, a person who wants to build up good study habits would read his books, read his friend's books and read the books in the library, which will only overwhelm his brain. This, obviously, wouldn't normally work. Though one promises to himself that he would start studying seriously today, one can only study as hard as he can. Be reminded that you can only do so much. Reading so many books will only confuse you, take up a lot of your time and will only bring you nothing but headaches. Moderation is the main element. If you want to study for an exam, use the material you have readily available and use it well. It may not have all the details that you need to learn, but mastering that material can already ensure you a great amount of essential knowledge.

Keep it as easy and as small as you can. Think about a good habit that you believe you can establish within your capabilities. For example, you have an upcoming exam tomorrow and you understand that you are not good in memorizing things. To develop a good study habit, you must admit your weakness and do something about it. Obviously, training your mind to memorize won't just happen overnight; however, there is something that you can do to compensate for it. Instead of trying to memorize each phrase, why not simply make an effort to understand the concepts behind it? It won't only enable you to reply to do your exam tomorrow, but it will also allow you to store substantial information without great stress.

Do it every day. The trick towards building up any kind of habit is consistency - take action every day. Just like how you make yourself remember an important information, repetition is the main element. Repetition and regularity will make the act automated.

Chapter 3 – How to Become a Leader That Everyone Will Follow

Leadership is a term so broad and an idea so vast that a lot of people have various perceptions on what leadership means. In a rather simple context, leadership is a trait or quality attributed to a leader, and a leader is seen as a person whom a group of people follows or a person who guides and directs his subordinates. A leader is someone who can do so much as to influence other people, and enlist their aid and support.

    WHAT LEADERSHIP IS Not

As leadership is a subject stretching far and wide, understanding it better can be derived not always from trying to figure out what it is but rather realizing what it is not.

Leadership is not a trait acquired at birth. Leaders are not born. Leaders are built. In the olden times, many societies believed the otherwise. Aristocracy and monarchy believed that leadership is in the genes. They have chosen leaders born to elite and rich families. As the modern times drew in, this idea of designating a leader merely by his birth was revolutionized. Being a leader is not something the gods choose for someone. Being a leader is something a person chooses for himself. Leadership cannot be attained through birthrights, wealth, or fame. Leadership is achieved through dedication, hard work, and experience.

Leadership is not power over others. Rather, leadership is power with them. Power with, not over, the people is good leadership for that matter. Making people follow their leader because of threat is not leadership at all. Leadership is having the capability to motivate them to work together for commonly held goal. What is even more important for all people, especially leaders, to realize is that followers are not made because there are leaders. Instead, leaders are made because there are followers. Leadership is a power given by the many and should be used for the welfare of the many.

The existence of a group does not always call for the appointment of a leader. Not every group has a leader, and not every group needs one. Basically, groups that are to exist only for a short period of time and those that will not undergo stressful and careful decision-making and plan execution do not call for the appointment of a leader. In such cases, the responsibilities and tasks of a leader are evenly distributed among the members of the group.

Leaders are not always driving their members towards the positive side. While this should be the case, there have been leaders who chose to put their welfare and personal interests ahead even at the expense of their members’ well-being. The sad truth is that they exist even until now. There are not just leaders out there. There are good leaders and bad
