M r. Darcy awaits you in the drawing room, ma’am.

Elizabeth took a deep breath. Adjusting the drape of her ballgown, she managed a smile for her maid.

Thank you, Claudine. I shall meet Mr. Darcy downstairs shortly.

The maid bobbed a neat curtsy, and stood with her back to the wall, awaiting further instructions.

Elizabeth glanced at herself in the full-length mirror by the window. Her dressing and grooming had taken quite some time, and she hoped the result had been worth it. Her maids always took a great deal of trouble with her dressing and toilette. But today, they had worked wonders, just so that she might present herself at her very best.

She stepped back and peered at herself, taking in her appearance from head to toe. Would she pass muster?

It was her fervent hope that she would not let her husband down. He would look formidable as ever in his formal wear, as befitted a man of his stature. Elizabeth was determined to show she was a worthy wife for him.

It was exceedingly important, not least for her own peace of mind. As Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, she knew she was likely to endure more scrutiny than she ever had as Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Casting an eye over herself, she concluded that the venture had been a success. Her dress was unarguably fashionable. Her pinned-up hair was elegant, bedecked with fresh flowers and pearls. Her complexion was fresh and glowing. Her dark eyes glittered in the candlelight.

All in all, she was as polished as a new pin.

Would Mr. Darcy approve of her attire? She believed he would.
