“Do we have to beat each other with birch twigs?’ I wondered.

‘Why would we want to do that?’ asked my sister, Debs.

‘I think that’s what they do in Finland.’

‘But we’re not in Finland, are we? And we haven’t got any birch twigs. I wouldn’t even know where to get birch twigs. I wouldn’t know a birch tree if it knocked on the door one day, collecting for birch charities and wearing a T-shirt.’
