Natasha Neuzerling

Hey, I’m Natasha Neuzerling, though I’ve also written under Cinnibar Rose, Rose Irons and Rose Lane (choosing a pen name is hard). I was born and grew up in a relatively normal family and relatively normal suburb – which is lucky, because there is little that is normal about myself. I would describe myself as a cat in human form: I prefer to watch rather than participate, I’m quiet, on the independent side, curious, rather vain, and if I let my body have its way, I’d sleep 12 hours a day. Luckily for my ambitions, I don’t let it do that.I’ve been writing short stories and planning longer projects for as long as I can remember. Though my childhood was primarily focused on fantasy, my current interests lie in mysteries and the paranormal.I hold a Bachelor of Arts, majoring and minoring in writing and children’s literature, respectively, and as of 2019 I’m working towards a Masters in Information Management. When I’m not writing or studying, I’m probably reading Agatha Christie or dealing with the antics of my two cats.Come along on my writing journey with me!

    Ciarán

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and I was completely screwed.

Please be here, please be here, I prayed as I dug through my desk drawers. I reached the bottom without finding anything, and swore quietly to myself, fighting down a growing bubble of panic. I knew I hid it in my desk, because my family knew not to touch my desk unless I specifically told them to. I figured it was the best place to hide something I wanted kept a secret, but now my foresight was coming back to bite me. Where could it have gone?

What kind of psychic was I if I couldn’t keep track of my own things?

    Ciarán? Brigid’s voice said.

I gave an embarrassingly high pitched shriek, whirling around and stumbling into my chair. Bloody Hell, Brigid! I gasped, leaning over my desk to catch my breath. In my borderline panic, I hadn’t even sensed her coming up the stairs.

My sister laughed so hard she nearly fell over, braced against the study door. I just folded my arms and glared at her. I think your make-up is running, I said scathingly.

Finally she caught her breath, and straightened up with a stupid smirk on her face. Brigid wore a truely ridiculous Santa hat she had customised to match the rest of her wardrobe, with lines of lace and ruffles. Her red velvet dress with huge fluffy petticoats was no more subtle. The hell was that, Ciarán? What’s happened to your magic powers? You’re supposed to be able to tell where anyone is from a kilometre away!

That is a terrible exaggeration and you know it, I told her, brushing my white-blond hair back off my face. I would have to be completely dead to manage that, not merely half-dead. Besides, I was... distracted.

I can see that. What are you up to? Kastle’s going to be home soon and then we’ll be off to Longhaven Hall! She frowned suspiciously. "You’re not thinking
