I do so love the countryside in June, Elizabeth said, shading her eyes against the sunshine. And I am delighted to have you back at Pemberley too, Georgiana. You have been missed these past three weeks.

Elizabeth's sister-in-law clasped her hand joyfully. I am very happy to be home too, dear sister. It was wonderful to spend time in London with my aunt. But returning home always warms the heart.

The young women walked together, arm-in-arm, in a companionable silence. Pemberley was a vision of early summer beauty. Dandelions and daisies dotted the grass beside the path.

In the distance, Elizabeth could see that the orchards were already green and lush, the trees beginning to sprout the green buds of new apples and pears, to fill their autumnal puddings and pies.

The blackberry bushes did not yet bear their dark purple berries, but Elizabeth knew their sweet promise would follow soon. All in good time. The brambles would yield basketfuls of fruit by early September. They would eat this bounty throughout the long winter that would follow.

As they passed the edge of the paddock, Elizabeth stopped to watch the farrier exercising the horses.

What regal animals, Georgiana declared. I always think they are quite the most dignified of all animals. What do you think, sister?

Indeed they are. Elizabeth sighed. I am quite envious of gentlemen, you know. How I would love to ride whenever I wished, as they do.

Elizabeth watched the groom with the horses, thinking what a lovely job he had. The groom held out his hand, and the largest horse ate a carrot directly from it.

Do you have any experience with horses, Elizabeth? Did you learn to ride as a girl? Georgiana's wide blue eyes looked up at Elizabeth.

Sadly not. My family was not in a position to take on the expenses of riding lessons for five daughters, nor to accommodate any horses not required for work.
