    Chapter One

    The man must be addled!

Elizabeth’s skirts swung around her feet as she paced her bedchamber, her thoughts winding in illogical patterns that made grasping a single thought and holding it nearly impossible.

Oh, but of course, Mr. Darcy was addled!

He was also arrogant, and calculating, and stubborn, and possessed of that irreparable masculine pride that said any woman he set his eyes on, and then made love to, must fall at his feet in a dead faint and with one hand extended for him to slip a ring onto her waiting finger!

Her feet carried her to the windowsill and back to the wall, yet again. Her gown was in danger of sliding right off due to her loosened stays as she had been about to dress for dinner and finding herself too restless to do so. She ignored that danger, her feet taking her back to the window, yet again.

She paused there. The landscape should have been a balm for her feelings, but all it did was make her crave the sight of anything other than that pastoral scenery.

Now, he has completely ruined the sight of my own home for me the...the maddening creature!

Her low cry ripped from her throat and she turned away from the window, her temper flashing so high she was certain she would suffer some sort of seizure and topple dead to the floor at any moment.

That would certainly not teach him a lesson. He is too stubborn and thick-headed to learn a thing!

She sat on the edge of her bed with a muffled groan.

The door came open and Jane stood there. Jane’s face, pale and lovely, held concern. I thought I heard you up here. Pray tell, what has set you to pacing so? And why have you not come down to dinner? They are waiting.

Elizabeth said, My stays are proving unconquerable.

Oh. Jane moved quickly to her side. Stand up then. Let’s get you laced in.

Elizabeth did not want to be laced in. She wanted to fling her clothing aside, crawl under the covers, and remain there until she was too old and senile for Mr. Darcy to bother with her any longer!

There, Jane said as she finished the lacing. Now can you halt your fit of pique, or at least tell me what has you in such a temper? I do not believe, for one moment, that it was your stays.

Oh, what can I say? That I may reproduce and unleash yet another Mr. Darcy onto the world as I let him make love to me in the woods as if we were both animals and not civilized human beings? That I may be not only sacrificed upon the altar of our mother’s social aspirations, but hauled to a very literal altar and likely
