Spring’s Gift
Wear a pink ribbon upon your sleeve to show your affection for me.
Elizabeth felt her cheeks heating for the what must have been the thousandth time that evening as she replayed Mr. Darcy’s words over in her mind. The ribbon he had requested had been added to her dress and she ran her fingers over the new edging on her favorite gown. In the candlelight, it would glow warmly against her skin and she only hoped that Mr. Darcy would be pleased to see it there. Undoubtedly, so , she reasoned. There was no need to be nervous about seeing him again… but there was a knot in her stomach that no amount of reassurance could untie. Until she saw his dark eyes and felt his hands around her waist… until that moment she would be full of tension and unease.
She had taken a terrible risk that day under the trees, and if something should arise - if he should change his mind. No. That would be impossible. A gentleman such as Mr. Darcy would never stoop to such a level. But the possibility of ruin trembled in the back of Elizabeth’s mind, and she could not chase it away.
Jane, blissfully unaware of her sister’s plight sat across from her in the carriage as it rumbled towards Netherfield Park. With minimal effort, Jane looked radiant, and there was no disguising the mixture of happiness and hope that shone in her blue eyes.
"Lizzie, you are very quiet tonight, I should think you would be excited for Jane," Mrs. Bennet said. Elizabeth, startled out of her thoughts did her best to put a smile upon her face, if only for Jane’s sake.
Of course, Mama,
she began, but Mrs. Bennet’s rapid conversation rolled over her daughter’s words.
Now, I know you will be disappointed to see that most disagreeable Mr. Darcy,
Mrs. bennet lamented. I have half a mind to judge poor Mr. Bingley for his choice of friends, but I cannot be too hard on a gentleman who makes my dear Jane so happy.
Mama,
Jane protested. You cannot be so harsh with a gentleman we hardly know.
I can and I shall,
Mrs. Bennet sniffed. He was so terribly rude to our dear Lizzie. Why even Mr. Bennet had half a mind to give him a stern lecture.
Mr. Bennet harrumphed from his seat and thumped his cane on the carriage floor. I most certainly said no such thing,
he said stiffly. Elizabeth covered her mouth to suppress her laughter at the expression on her mother’s face.
Mrs. Bennet huffed
